Fiddlers Crossing is proud to present Irish master fiddler Kevin Burke on Friday, Nov. 8, in Mountain Bible Church. When the concert's engineer, Peter Cutler, asked Burke's agent what kind of back-up musicians would be playing with him, he was told: "When you're Kevin Burke, you don't need any back-up!" The concert will be comprised of one man with a fiddle, alone on the stage, completely filling the air with some of the best Irish fiddle playing you're likely to hear in your lifetime. Kevin...

  • Kick-Stomp Ensemble revs up Summer on July 27

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Jul 20, 2019

Summer is the time for fun and travel, and the Kick-Stomp Ensemble should bring plenty of both when their wild mixture of edgy folk, punk and world music comes to Fiddlers Crossing on Saturday, July 27. The travel, of course, will be a musical journey throughout the world – spanning many cultures, traditions and languages. This eclectic quartet will even take us to a cantina in a galaxy far, far away, playing a popular tune on the banjo. Be prepared, however, for a world slightly twisted and p...

  • Closed – but not forever

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Mar 16, 2019

Last year our open houses were better attended than any year since we opened! Almost twice as many folks came out to meet our critters and we are so grateful. So why are we closing? The answer is complicated: We have struggled with getting volunteers for the past two years. The open houses are run by the nonprofit which relies on volunteers and last year, it came down to three or four people to manage the open houses; that includes everything from cleaning and prep to leading tours. We were all...

  • Whitherward Comes Hither March 16

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Mar 2, 2019

This show has been rescheduled from March 8 to the 16th due to weather. Whitherward: a 13th-century word meaning, "toward what or which place." It's also a 21st-century acoustic band. In 2014, Edward Williams and Ashley Norton formed Whitherward and set a goal to leave Nashville "to play music we love for people that love music." The travelling duo, with the addition of Stephanie Groot on fiddle, mandolin and ukulele, will bring their brand of Americana/Indie-Folk to Fiddlers Crossing on Friday,...

Christmas music always has a mystical quality that harkens back to mysterious times and places, except when it doesn't. If you get that, then you get Christmas music. On Dec. 2 and 9, we once again have the opportunity to explore the mystery when the Tehachapi Pops Orchestra presents its annual Christmas concert. Conductor Robby Martinez will once again will lead the Orchestra as they share...

  • West My Friend returns Nov. 18

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Oct 27, 2018

The Fiddlers Crossing poster for West My Friend reads: "Canadian eclectic acoustic ensemble." The trio of young and accomplished musicians from Vancouver Island has also been called an "Indie folk pop band," or simply "Indie roots." Other music reviewers have called the band, "Third-wave indie rock pop with three-part harmonies," and their style, "Cascadian third-wave indie progressive chamber folk-roots music." Obviously, West My Friend defies being pigeon-holed into any one genre. Their blend...

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Aug 4, 2018

Listening to the old-school country songs and honest back porch voice of Amber Cross has been likened to putting an archival Smithsonian recording on the turntable. Hers is an authentic voice, both in sound and feeling. She writes from her own life's struggles and experiences, with great power and emotion and a sense of place. She will be bringing her raw, old-school country sound back to Fiddlers Crossing for the third time on Saturday, Aug. 25, accompanied by her husband, James Moore on...

  • Bryan Bowers to bring autoharp virtuosity to Fiddlers Crossing, May 5

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Apr 28, 2018

Anyone who was in elementary school in the mid-Twentieth Century will remember the autoharp. In those days, we all sang every day in our classrooms, and autoharp was the most ubiquitous instrument for accompaniment. Being picked to play it on any given day was an honor. We learned a basic strum and the three buttons to push for chords in a particular key. Bryan Bowers, one of the foremost masters of the autoharp, has taken it far from the schoolroom. On Saturday, May 5, at 7 p.m., Bowers will...

  • 'Folk-Rock' duo Ryanhood returns Feb. 23

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Feb 17, 2018

In the 1970s, some folksingers, including Bob Dylan, began to "plug-in" and "amp up" like the rockers. Now, pop music is coming full circle as many rock 'n' rollers un-plug. For instance, the two former rockers of Ryanhood, Ryan Green and Cameron Hood, were named 'Best Group/Duo in the 2014 International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMAs). They will demonstrate this blending of musical genres when they return to the stage at Fiddlers Crossing on February 23. Green and Hood met in high school where...

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Jan 6, 2018

Fiddlers Crossing is starting the new year with some old-style American music Friday, Jan. 12 when jug band icon Jim Kweskin performs in concert. Kweskin is best known as a singer and leader of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. The band was active in the Boston area in the 1960s, modernizing the sounds of pre-World War II rural music and adding the element of "fun" at a time when the coffee houses were filled with murder ballads and protest songs. Jug band music is an all-American mix of traditional fol...
