  • Which trees do best in Tehachapi?

    Rick Gillies|Mar 17, 2018

I have been asked several times just this past week for citrus and avocado trees. You can tell when people are just moving to Tehachapi by what they ask for. I had to tell them I'm sorry, but they don't grow up here in the mountains. Why not? Citrus is damaged when the temperature is 25-27 degrees for 3 to 4 hours during the night. This year our low so far has been around 16 degrees, which could kill a citrus tree, at least the flowers, for the coming season. They grow great in Bakersfield, but...

Whenever my husband Al and I visit Anchorage, we head to the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum next to Lake Hood and become lost in the vintage aircraft and wonderful old photographs of the pioneering pilots of the far north. What incredible spirit, these men had! It is totally unbelievable to imagine the suffering they endured in the bitter frozen arctic flying open cockpit airplanes, yet they opened a new frontier and furthered aviation in a place that cried out to their adventuresome spirits....
