  • The art of turning memories into jewelry

    Julianna Crisalli|Oct 27, 2018

As she opens her notebook, filled with past, present and future projects, Alejandra Whittier begins to sketch a beautiful and unique ring. I was immediately envious of her talent and artistic eye that can create a new jewelry concept within seconds. Alejandra was born in Mexico, and has lived in Tehachapi for 12 years. In college, she studied interior design and has worked with companies that specialized in furniture and industrial design. But she always had an interest in learning how to make...

  • Be part of Tehachapi's legacy, vote yes on Measure R

    Michelle Vance|Oct 27, 2018

The election is almost upon us, and I can't help but reflect on the journey to November. It's been quite an expedition getting Measure R on the Nov. 6 ballot, one that has come with plenty of opposition and enthusiasm. I take every comment, negative or uplifting, into consideration. I understand the worries surrounding the financial aftereffects for taxpayers if it passes and I commend the bravery that comes with backing the vision. And that is exactly what this is, a beautiful and achievable...

  • Apple possibilities are endless at Ha's

    Pat Doody|Oct 27, 2018

We all know that it's apple season in Tehachapi. Most Tehachapi growers open in September and close near the end of October. However, Ha's Apple Farm will be open longer. David Ha said that the Fuji apple which makes up a large portion of his crop is available almost year-round. He currently hopes to be open until the end of November. In Japan, the Fuji apple is often crossed with other varieties to keep it in stores longer, says Ha. It is also somewhat resistant to mildew. The Fuji is a sweet a...

Aimed at the tracks, the camera sends live video 24/7 to a YouTube channel on the internet called Tehachapi Live Train Cam. www.youtube.com/c/TehachapiLiveTrainCam/live is the link for that camera. Visitors from all over the world can (and do) view trains around the clock. The site's chat area allows people to t...

  • TVRPD promotes improvement of facilities

    Phyllis Belcher|Oct 27, 2018

A key concern for Kiwanis is the well-being of children, and they were interested to know how Measure R would improve outdated recreational facilities. Therefore, they invited Michelle Vance and Laura Lynne Wyatt to tell them about the measure which would upgrade and renovate existing parks, grounds and recreational facilities in the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District. The measure is on the November ballot and must pass by a 2/3 majority. Vance said TVRPD was formed in 1959 and...

The painting portrays Lena Hayes and her two daughters, Sody and GayLee as children standing with their mother. Two other children are in the picture. They are Sody's two children, Tim and Cindy, also pictured as kids. Sody's memories of her home town seem to fit in with that line of town folk waiting to buy a ticket. • Dark and scary times

    Mel White|Oct 27, 2018

Every year around this time I like to write about enjoying dark and scary thoughts. It is Halloween time, after all, and I love the whole month being full of scary movies on TV and in the movie complexes, and scary stories in magazines and books, and dark tales of murder and mayhem and ghosts and goblins everywhere from around the campfire to around the kitchen table. I've always loved the rush of emotions that come with horror stories. October's overloaded tribute to Halloween is right up my...

"Ghosting" Facebook Breaking off a relationship suddenly without telling the other person and then ignoring all communications from that person is called "ghosting." If you can't quite delete your Facebook account yet (maybe because you'd miss out on photos from traveling friends or kids and grandkids) you can try ghosting Facebook instead. But why would you want to ghost Facebook? Reason #1 Facebook would like you to use something called Two Factor Authentication (TFA) to help secure your...

    Diana Wade, Disability Advocate|Oct 27, 2018

  • 3D printing at the Library

    Mark Fisher, Doc|Oct 27, 2018

The Tehachapi Library has two new 3D printers. These were donated by the Greater Tehachapi Economic Development Council, along with several spools of the plastic filament that these 3D printers use. These are not yet available for the general public to use, since there are details still needed on the process to be in place for people to come in and use them. (They have to work through the bureaucracy.) But it's only a matter of time for that to be worked out. For now the library is providing...

  • West My Friend returns Nov. 18

Other music reviewers have called the band, "Third-wave indie rock pop with three-part harmonies," and their style, "Cascadian third-wave indie progressive chamber folk-roots music." Obviously, West My Friend defies being pigeon-holed into any one genre. Their blend...
