    Pat Gracey|Apr 14, 2018

During the past sixty years or so, driving south down Highway 395 from the Bishop area, one would have noticed a steam locomotive on the west side of the main street going through Independence, Calif. It had been placed there in 1955 after having been taken out of active duty to become an exhibit for people to stop and examine and have a picture taken alongside. The engine, always called the Slim Princess, Locomotive #18, of the Carson & Colorado Railroad and later the Southern Pacific, had led...

  • Preserving Tehachapi wildlife

    Julianna Crisalli|Apr 14, 2018

Many people relocate to Tehachapi for the beautiful nature and proximity to the creatures who live here. It's amazing to live in a town where deer, birds, raccoons and wildcats casually roam through your yard. Sue Hammer, the founder of Tehachapi Wildlife Rehab and Education, said this desire to be close to nature too often comes with a lack of understanding and compassion for local wildlife. "They were here first, they didn't do anything. We moved in, we didn't pay them for their land, we've...

  • Golden Queen Mine Shelter

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor Pro Tempore|Apr 14, 2018

I was born in 1950. Now you can all figure out my age! I declare this to emphasize that I grew up during the Cold War after World War II. Because I lived in Mojave with a Marine Base next to me, until 1958, and our close proximity to Edwards Air Force Base (a major flight test facility), children my age in elementary school lived in constant fear that we would all be wiped out by an atomic bomb dropped near us. As children we had no real understanding of how real that threat could be. We had reg...

  • Useful software and tips

    Greg Cunningham|Apr 14, 2018

Network activity The network icon we've had since Windows 7 is useless because all it does is tell if you're connected to the internet or not, which you probably figured out because you've been searching Google for 55 Chevy alternator brackets. But man, Windows XP had a network icon that did something. Like what? Oh, it blinked in time with your network traffic, and you could right click on it and see how much tractor-parts-related (or whatever) data you've used. Fear not, we can fix this, and...

  • The Generational Divide

    Bill Mead, Columnist Emeritus|Apr 14, 2018

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission Our granddaughter Nikki and her husband Buddy came by the house over the weekend and something in our conversation took me back to the days when radios and TVs were full of vacuum tubes. When I started to reminisce, it quickly became clear they didn't have a clue what I was talking about. I don't believe they have ever seen a vacuum tube because their expressions remained blank when I described it as a sort of light...

  • Flourishing with spiritual practices

    Nancy Bacon, Reverend|Apr 14, 2018

Are you flourishing – enjoying life – happy and healthy? Spiritual practices have been shown to promote health and well-being. I think most of us could use a bit more flourishing. He wanted to determine what components of spirituality, if any, contribute to well-being and human happiness. In 1938, he began studying undergraduates and followed them for more than 75 years, measuring var...
