With the holiday season fast approaching, why not consider the gift of learning for yourself or for a child? Learning, or further developing a new skill, can be extremely confidence-boosting and bring lasting satisfaction and enjoyment that few store-bought gifts can match. And learning with other like-minded, curious students can foster friendships and creativity that aren't likely to develop in front of a video screen. Furthermore, the discipline and focus required to excel in one area of...

Searching for something to write a column about can be a slow process sometimes, and going through my mother Marion Deaver's files can be frustrating at best. There is tons of material there, but some of it is her handwritten notes on a subject before she put the article together. Her handwriting is not always discernible and I tend to defer to her written copies of history that she recorded. When I run out of those I will have to begin the arduous task of copying those notes. I recently found...

Take advantage of dollar cost averaging One of the benefits of participating in your workplace savings plan is that you're automatically using an investment strategy called dollar cost averaging. With dollar cost averaging, you acquire shares of an investment by investing a fixed dollar amount at regularly scheduled intervals over time. When the price is high, your investment buys less; when prices are low, the same dollar investment will buy more shares. A regular, fixed-dollar investment...
Haven't I told you to shop around? Just this weekend a past client contacted me about a mortgage transaction. They are moving out of state and the paperwork didn't look right. They had told the online lender they wanted a loan with no points and low fees. The Loan Estimate I was shown not only had over $3,000 in points, but also had five line items of junk fees that add to over $1,200. It looks to me like the "Lender Beginning with the 17th Letter of the Alphabet" was trying to pull a fast one....

The holidays may be a source of many special memories. Also temptation, stress, and oversize expectations may throw you a curve ball or two. How can you possibly maintain your balance through it all, let alone stay healthy? Check out these seven tips for a healthier holiday. 1. Beat the bugs. Add "flu shot" to your to-do list, unless of course you've already gotten it done. Also, wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds. Mayor Ed Grimes handed me a treasure one day, it was a small textbook printed in 1928 from the High School Home Studies Bureau entitled "The Blue Book of Civics". It sits as a display piece in my office, an antiquity, but a useful one at that. Much of what was written and taught in 1928 still surprisingly applies today, nothing more so than the first chapter on the first page that answers the basic question, "What is a Community?" The answer from the book: "A community is a group of people who...

It was a focal point for dances, local entertainment, meetings and silent movie films. A 1915 Tehachapi newspaper announced a Charlie Chaplain movie, The Little Tramp, being shown at the local Opera House. Margaret Erbel, a young Tehachapi resident still in her teens, was known to play the piano for the silent...
