  • Plant that tree!

    Rick Gillies|Dec 8, 2018

Well, its the holiday season and time to start thinking about Christmas again! I am writing this article to let people know how to care for a living Christmas tree and how easy it is. Here are some tips. (1) Use a large saucer to catch drips and save the carpet. 2) Water and let dry before bringing inside. 3) Bring in approximately 10-14 days before Christmas. 4) Place in a cool location, away from heater vents. 5) Water the tree with ice cubes in the pot about every other day while inside....

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Dec 8, 2018

The Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District is finalizing a strategic plan that will be a blueprint for successive generations of administrators of the public wholesale water agency. "When the board hired me, one of our goals was to establish a guide for budgeting and operations," District Manager Tom Neisler said. "We wanted to prepare a plan for our successors. We want people who follow to know what we were thinking." Neisler presented the document – the result of four public workshops w...

  • Holiday train village adds some Christmas cheer to Tehachapi Depot

    Julianna Crisalli|Dec 8, 2018

Mike Nixon and his team did Tehachapi proud for the arrival of Santa Claus at the Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum on Dec. 1. The days leading up to Breakfast with Santa and photo ops with the jolly elf, Nixon and crew were busy setting up the holiday train display inside the Depot ... making sure each house, track and miniature figure was in the best position. Dozens of picturesque houses, holiday decorations and miniature characters, line the 32 feet by 12 feet train village display. There's no...

  • Happy holidays

    Mel White|Dec 8, 2018

As a child, thanks to my mother’s never-ending desire to learn all about other peoples and other religions, I found out that while I was totally and enthusiastically (and sometimes single-mindedly) enthralled with Christmas, there were also a number of other holidays being celebrated in that special time between Thanksgiving and the end of the year. I was, however, simply all about getting presents. As I grew older, I came to understand more about the spirit of Christmas and the meaning of t...

  • What's Up in Stallion Springs?

    Ed Gordon|Dec 8, 2018

Papa's House is back. Eat, enjoy, repeat is the motto for Papa's House. After an absence of nearly three months the newly remodeled restaurant opened in mid-November. Originally known as Papa's the restaurant is back with a new owner, Dan Desmond. Pizza is still a staple of the new menu. Breads, sauces and pizza dough are handmade, as they should be. Desmond said, "We're trying to keep the legacy of the original owners going." Papa's House is open every day except Monday. Stop by and try a...

    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|Dec 8, 2018

Two Saturday’s ago, the streets of Downtown Tehachapi were filled with patrons at Main Street Tehachapi’s Annual Ugly Sweater Wine Walk. The fundraiser, which invites attendees to walk through our thriving downtown area and sample wine and food from local businesses, sold nearly 500 tickets and was a huge success. Reports from local businesses also drew praise for the number of visitors and new residents that were enjoying the festivities. They found this out because in typical Teh...

  • Meet Your New Neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Dec 8, 2018

After 24 years in Santa Clarita, in a house that overlooked Saugus High School, Robin and Kathe Rich purchased a home in Bear Valley with room for horses. They had always wanted to be able to have their horse at home and now they have room to add more horses if they desire. The Santa Clarita area grew too much said Kathe and they found Tehachapi a beautiful peaceful place to live. Fortunately, Robin does not do a daily commute to work. He is the Facilities Manager of the West Los Angeles...

  • Internet speeds, sand and computers

    Greg Cunningham|Dec 8, 2018

Internet speed tests Do you know how fast your internet is? Do you know how fast it should be? A quick check of the bill from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or a phone call to your ISP, will tell you what speed you're paying for. Now for testing. At first, the only way to check your Internet speed was at www.speedtest.net. Over time, their site filled up with ads and wasn't the easiest thing to look at. Then the good folks at Netflix released www.fast.com. No ads and it's easy to use, if...

  • Those darned bubble lights

    Pat Gracey|Dec 8, 2018

In 1950, when my husband and I were newlyweds, we decorated our first Christmas tree. Since his Marine Corps salary, in those days, didn't cover too many extras, we relied on a charge account with good old Sears and Roebuck. From their catalog I ordered some ornaments and lights but Sears said they were out of the particular lights I had ordered so they sent me a better quality replacement for the same price. Good customer service. They must have sent me their best super-duper type lights for th...

  • Hope grows when shared

    Nancy Bacon, Reverend|Dec 8, 2018

What do you hope for during the holidays? Have you been good? Is Santa headed your way? Or do your hopes run deep for peace and harmony in your life, your family, community, nation and around the world? So many things to hope for, if you have hope. Many people feel hope is distant and for some it has disappeared. Rates of suicide have risen in our country in recent years. As a therapist, I know the one question that correlates best with risk for suicide is whether or not a person has hope. I...

  • Asking for help

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Dec 8, 2018

For nearly three decades, I have helped clients all over California buy and refinance their homes. It's familiar to be the voice of reason and guidance for other people's dreams and problems, and it's so satisfying to provide financing to further families' real estate ambitions. So it came as a huge reminder recently, when I was out of my professional element, what exactly it means to ask for help. There's a nasty virus going around town, and although I consider myself a healthy person, I...

    The Loop Newspaper|Dec 8, 2018

Due to weather the annual Christmas Parade, presented by the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce, was delayed and held the evening of Sunday, Dec. 2. The brisk weather and date change didn't keep locals from coming out to enjoy the festive parade, which had nearly 100 entrants. Following the parade, the annual Christmas Tree Lighting event was held at the Tehachapi Depot and Railroad Museum where Santa Claus visited and heard the Christmas wishes of the children. 18th Annual Christmas Parade...

  • Norwegian fjords and glitches

    Anne Marie Novinger|Dec 8, 2018

In late August, George and I took a Norwegian fjord cruise for two weeks, with the expert guidance of Travel by Jenni. But that ship was too big for us - 3,000 passengers! We had to take long, long walks to get around. Norway is a beautiful country though. We included stops both ways to visit my brother and his family in the east and we were gone three weeks. My favorite fjords and scenes on the cruise were the world-famous Gerainger fjord and the fjords east of Bergen along with their Alp-like...

  • Panic attack versus heart attack – Am I disabled?

    Diana Wade, Disability Advocate|Dec 8, 2018

Many of us will experience anxiety or panic attacks during our lives, both of which have symptoms that can mimic heart diseases like atrial fibrillation - an irregular heart beat. Symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks can significantly impair quality of life. Severe anxiety can stem from, as well as cause, depression. To further complicate things, the stress and anxiety that often cause panic attacks can also lead to heart attacks. Panic attacks and heart attacks can feel frighteningly similar:...
