  • The snowball effect of giving back

    Julianna Crisalli|Feb 16, 2019

Last week I visited Have a Heart Humane Society, not to adopt the adorable puppy I fell in love with, but to witness a wonderful act of kindness. For the last eight years, Red House BBQ owners Mano and Mei Mei Lujan have held their Super Bowl Charity BBQ Cater, offering the highest bidder a Super Bowl meal that feeds 25. This year, Barbara Ferrante, proprietor of Jake's Steakhouse, was the winner with her $425 bid. Not only did she win the 25 meals, but the chance to donate her bid to a local...

  • Local woman heads to Russia for Armlifting World Championships

    Julianna Crisalli|Feb 2, 2019

Strength comes from so many places and Autumn Cote's strength reaches far beyond her incredible physical accomplishments. This May, Autumn will be traveling to Russia to compete in the Armlifting World Championships, representing the United States in the women's 60 kilo or 132-pound class. "I am very excited. I am nervous this will [be] by far the biggest stage I will have ever competed on. To represent our country makes it even more important," she said. The 36-year-old has been strength...

  • Big smiles, bigger adventures in store for Jacob Sawade

    Julianna Crisalli|Jan 19, 2019

I met Jacob Sawade in high school. He's the older brother of a friend of mine and I remember him always smiling with such a positive and bright outlook on life. Jacob, 37, was born with cerebral palsy, but that has never stopped his adventurous soul. After a recent surgery, he hasn't been able to get around as easily as he'd like and the wheelchair he was using never let him explore as much as he wanted. He began doing some research and found his dream chair! The Action Trackchair would allow...

  • Make a resolution to help our local nonprofits

    Julianna Crisalli|Jan 5, 2019

I make New Year's resolutions each year and typically they are broken quickly. They are also all about me and pretty stereotypical - lose weight, eat healthier, stop procrastinating, finally become the Yoga master I know I am ... that sort of thing. I'm trying something new this year. I'm making my resolutions about others. Specifically, nonprofits in our community that could always use extra support. I want to donate more of my time, energy and resources to the places and people in Tehachapi...

  • An 8-year-old's guide to Christmas presents

    Julianna Crisalli|Dec 22, 2018

My typical procrastinating self finished holiday shopping seven days prior to Christmas. This is good for me, really good. Yes, I wanted it done in November, but still...a week to spare! My daughter on the drive to school this morning started asking for hints about her gifts. This happens every year and you can't help but giggle at the enthusiasm for gifts that come with this age. The things she said next though melted my heart and made this mama very proud. "You know you're the best gift I get...

  • Holiday train village adds some Christmas cheer to Tehachapi Depot

    Julianna Crisalli|Dec 8, 2018

Mike Nixon and his team did Tehachapi proud for the arrival of Santa Claus at the Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum on Dec. 1. The days leading up to Breakfast with Santa and photo ops with the jolly elf, Nixon and crew were busy setting up the holiday train display inside the Depot ... making sure each house, track and miniature figure was in the best position. Dozens of picturesque houses, holiday decorations and miniature characters, line the 32 feet by 12 feet train village display. There's no...

  • Our future leaders share their groundbreaking experience

    Julianna Crisalli|Dec 8, 2018

This week's Grassroots Tehachapi, looks at an actual "grassroots" project ... through the eyes of young students. The groundbreaking for the new sixth grade building at Jacobsen Middle School took place Nov. 15. Representatives and ASB leaders from the community's elementary schools were at the event and even got to help dig some of the first holes. The new building is said to be 13,175-square-feet and will hold 10 classrooms. I spoke to some of the students, and their enthusiasm for the project...

  • Veteran shares stories, smiles with Golden Hills daycare

    Julianna Crisalli|Nov 24, 2018

I have two very sweet and polite kids, but like all children, I know their attention span and ability to stay quiet when others are talking requires saintly patience. So, it was incredible for me to watch a group of elementary school children remain completely captivated by the stories and songs of Richard Oldenburg. In honor of Veterans Day, Oldenburg visited Golden Hills Extended Daycare on Nov. 15 to share stories of his time in the service. The kids were quiet as he talked about life at...

  • Slice of Life goes Hollywood for piano recital

    Julianna Crisalli|Nov 10, 2018

Slice of Life Enrichment School celebrated their first year in Tehachapi with a piano recital on Oct. 29. The recital theme was movie music and the 25 students who performed were encouraged to dress in costumes that matched their musical selection. They even walked a red carpet to the piano. Slice of Life owner Susan Minor said the kids enjoyed playing this type of music and the break from their standard classical music lessons. Some of the students who performed have been playing for about...

  • The art of turning memories into jewelry

    Julianna Crisalli|Oct 27, 2018

As she opens her notebook, filled with past, present and future projects, Alejandra Whittier begins to sketch a beautiful and unique ring. I was immediately envious of her talent and artistic eye that can create a new jewelry concept within seconds. Alejandra was born in Mexico, and has lived in Tehachapi for 12 years. In college, she studied interior design and has worked with companies that specialized in furniture and industrial design. But she always had an interest in learning how to make...

  • Tesla film crew visits, 'the friendliest town in the state'

    Julianna Crisalli|Oct 27, 2018

There's no denying, the Tesla is a pretty cool car. Its sleek design and use of clean energy makes it quite desirable. But what can make Tesla even cooler? Tehachapi Community Theatre and a lil' small town charm, of course. On Oct. 13, TCT actors volunteered to help create a spec ad with Director Daniel Kepler at our local Burger Spot in Downtown Tehachapi. Kepler is a VFX Editor and has worked on a number of Marvel movies including, "Black Panther," "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Avengers: Age...

  • Life lessons with Mr. Rogers – always find the helpers

    Julianna Crisalli|Sep 29, 2018

I learned a lot from Mr. Rogers as a kid. He continues to be a personal hero with his gentle and loving ways of teaching us how to handle life's beautiful and difficult moments. Maybe one of his best lessons was about helpers. "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping," he wrote. "To this day, especially in times of 'disaster,' I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by...

  • Little hearts share their big love for music

    Julianna Crisalli|Sep 15, 2018

Anyone who reads this column probably understands my love of music. Whether the quiet hum of a dulcimer or music that just feels right in the moment, music has always deeply touched me. It's no wonder my kids have (in my opinion at least) excellent taste in music, not to mention an exceptional appreciation of music. I have to say I am quite proud that both my 8-year-old and my 2-year-old quickly identify a wide-variety of genres and musicians when they pop up in the shuffle of my iPhone. Lady...

  • Love's gives back to children in need

    Julianna Crisalli|Sep 1, 2018

Love's Travel Stop in Tehachapi is making a lot of changes and helping kids in need along the way. As part of Love's national campaign, the Tehachapi branch is working in partnership with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals during August and September. CMNH, a nonprofit organization, has been raising funds and awareness for kids with illness and injuries since 1983. According to the Love's website, "Love's and its customers have raised more than $25 million to help sick and injured children in...

  • Making community a priority

    Julianna Crisalli|Aug 18, 2018

There are so many things in Tehachapi that remind me of my dad. The wildflowers, the people, the open and endless sky at dusk. But nothing quite brings him back to me like the gentle hum of a mountain dulcimer. I woke up to a lovely surprise a couple of weeks ago. Fiddlers Crossing, Tehachapi's local gathering place for beautiful concerts and art, posted on Facebook a preview of their upcoming mountain dulcimer concert with Steve Eulberg and Erin Mae Lewis. I already planned on attending the con...

  • Chalk on the Walk lines the streets in vibrant colors

    Julianna Crisalli|Aug 18, 2018

The streets of downtown Tehachapi were bright with color after the 2018 Chalk on the Walk on Aug. 11. Artists of all ages began claiming their 4 by 4-foot section of sidewalk canvas along Tehachapi Boulevard and Green Street at 7:30 a.m. It didn't take long for beautiful art to appear. While some of the artists were new to Chalk on the Walk, others like Best in Show winner Bridget Lucas have participated for "more years than I can remember." Lucas graduated from high school this year and is...

  • Wiener Run all-star keeps running

    Julianna Crisalli|Aug 18, 2018

When he's not winning races, he's playing with his favorite toys -- squeaky ones. And playing, by his request, means ripping the squeakers out of them. Rango, named after Johnny Depp's chameleon character in the movie with the same name, is a four-time champion of the Wiener Run during Tehachapi's All-American 4th of July Hot Dog Festival. This year, with changes to the fourth celebrations, the wiener dog race didn't happen. But Rango's mom and dad found him a new venue. On July 5, he won first...

  • There and Back Again: A Hobbit's Tale

    Julianna Crisalli|Jul 21, 2018

Her name is Darline Hartman, but you may know her as Grunge Hobbit. Grunge Hobbit has lived in Tehachapi with her wife for 13 years. This year, she decided to make the summer a little more interesting. After 10-months of training, Grunge Hobbit and her wife travelled to San Francisco to begin a journey. From June 3-9, she rode her bike 545-miles for the yearly AIDS/LifeCycle event. From San Francisco to Los Angeles, Grunge Hobbit rode during the day and camped at night. "I would not have been...

  • School pride has deep roots

    Julianna Crisalli|Jul 7, 2018

A mini-forest has sprouted at Tehachapi High School. After vandals cut down about two dozen trees in May, a group of nearly 130 volunteers took to the soil and replanted not only the destroyed trees, but a handful of extras as well. The incident, which was originally believed to be a senior prank, led to a lot of hurting hearts and an angry community. While other destruction took place on campus, like gluing coins over keyholes, those actions seem to be merely an annoyance, while the trees were...

  • Talk about depression, people in Tehachapi can help

    Julianna Crisalli|Jun 23, 2018

This week's column is slightly different, but it reaches the heart of what this column is meant to focus on - inspirational people, places and opportunities in our community that help others and make us stronger. When Anthony Bourdain took his own life a couple weeks ago, it left me sad and angry. There have been so many high-profile/celebrity suicides over the last few years that have come as such a shock and have felt deeply personal. Bourdain hit me hard, as did Robin Williams. They were...

  • Fight bullying with confidence and assertiveness

    Julianna Crisalli|Jun 9, 2018

Bullying can impact anyone. While school-aged bullies may be the most recognizable, the same intimidation, anger and violence can be found in the workplace, social gatherings and online. I know I experienced my share of bullying in school. More discouraging than that is recognizing the same intimidation patterns in "grown-ups" today. Thankfully, there are people in Tehachapi working to teach our locals kids how to maturely build defenses against these bullies. Force 5 Training Center recently...

  • Living in a sea of purple

    Julianna Crisalli|May 26, 2018

When I decided to move back to my hometown more than two years ago, I was incredibly lucky when it came to finding a house to rent. Dear family friends of mine own a lilac farm that just happens to have a beautiful rental home in the middle of the property. Today, I live in a sea of purple that is completely breathtaking. This year's harvest wrapped up about a week ago. While many of the remaining blooms are beginning to brown from the spring sun, there is still a hint of purple out each...

  • Helping art thrive in Tehachapi

    Julianna Crisalli|May 12, 2018

I come from a very artistic family. My mom and dad both painted and could easily create cute, beautiful sketches. And my brother, well, he can draw just about anything and it always comes out brilliant. I was always jealous of this talent and did my best to take as many art classes as possible. From basic drawing to ceramics and stained glass, I tried it all. I made a few "okay" things, but it definitely isn't my calling. Most importantly though, I had fun and the classes gave me new...
