A fine and memorable man left the Tehachapi Valley recently with the loss of Ronald Wayne Depew, 74, who passed away at his Tehachapi home on October 25 following a brief illness. Ron was friendly, big-hearted bear of a man with great love for his family, friends, Tehachapi and life in general. He believed you could do a lot of good in this world and still have fun doing it. Ron embodied the Italian phrase "Vivere la dolce vita," which means "Living the sweet life." Ron spent his career in...

  • A beautiful vine that changes with the seasons

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Nov 11, 2023

One of the hardiest and most ornamental vines you can plant in the Tehachapi Mountains is Virginia Creeper, an attractive plant that is native to the Eastern and Midwestern states. It is found in the wild as far west as Texas and Utah, but grows very well all the way to the Pacific states. It is known for its shiny, five-fingered leaflets that are bright green in spring and summer but then turn brilliant shades of red and burgundy in autumn. Virginia Creeper is a climber that can reach...

United Pegasus Foundation has been operating in Tehachapi since 1998. The organization was founded in 1994 by Helen Meredith, an avid horsewoman, with the mission to save retired racehorses from being sold for slaughter and to adopt out as many as possible. The original location of United Pegasus was Helen's backyard but moved to Mira Loma in 1995. In 1998 they purchased 20 acres in Cummings Valley and 15 acres in Hemet, California. • The joy of the tease

    Sheila Zanghi, contributing writer|Nov 11, 2023

I confess that when I was young, I was not able to hide my joy at discovering a person who was gullible. Gullible means someone is easily persuaded to believe, and belief is a crucial element when teasing. If someone isn't gullible teasing is ineffective. I also believe being gullible is a matter of how skeptical you are and how much of an authority you think the perpetrator of the action is. It is also a matter of how much teasing takes place in a family. I know my family teased us from an earl...

Fall is officially here! The leaves are turning colors and floating (or maybe whipping is a better word these days) through the air with all the Santa Ana wind we have been experiencing. What better way to celebrate fall but to bake an Apple Pie Cake and drink a warm Mulled Cider? Well, A Taste of Tehachapi has just the thing. The Apple Pie Cake mix is loaded with organically grown gala apples, organic Ceylon cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger and cardamon. All you add is eggs, oil and a couple...

  • Brick and mortar in a computer world

    Marty Pay, MBA, CLU, LUTC-F, contributing writer|Nov 11, 2023

Just about the time I retired earlier this year, a friend of mine sold his brick-and-mortar business. But he started the same business online and absolutely loves it! He says he's doubled his business, doesn't have to contend with the servicing and basically sets the client up with the product and then steps back. I can understand from a business perspective how this might be appealing, but what about the customer service we all grew up with as consumers and as small business owners? I get that...

  • Discover something by taking a walk

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Nov 11, 2023

I love things you discover when you take a walk. On Oct. 28, my friend and I had just finished lunch and decided to take a walk downtown. We figured it would be a nice way to digest our food. What we didn’t know was that we would discover a wonderful, serendipitous, entertaining and delightful event. This walk had taken us to where the Tehachapi Pops Orchestra was putting on their Halloween Spooktacular. We were invited in and completely taken by how all the decorations and musical instruments had modernized what used to be the old Moose Lodge....
