  • What is in a name?

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Jul 6, 2024

In this world of cyber communication, are we missing the opportunity for real connections with others? When we meet new people how much do we remember about them? How much do they remember us? Much of the time, it takes a genuine effort to get to know someone. We have to determine if we want to make more effort to get to know a person. This is easy when we are younger, but it can be a challenge as we age. Making connections requires effort. Sometimes we have to look at ourselves and determine how much effort we are putting into making...

  • Ducks in diapers and zebras on leashes

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Feb 17, 2024

Yes, we have seen or heard about these situations. You may even remember hearing about turkeys on airlines and pigs on buses. We have been domesticating and humanizing animals for centuries, however bringing our pets into restaurants, grocery stores, airlines and even churches have become a more recent trend in the United States. It makes me wonder why we have the need to parade our pets into these places? Is it because we can, so we do? Is taking our pets into situations where there are many different smells, unpredictable individuals and...

  • Discover something by taking a walk

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Nov 11, 2023

I love things you discover when you take a walk. On Oct. 28, my friend and I had just finished lunch and decided to take a walk downtown. We figured it would be a nice way to digest our food. What we didn’t know was that we would discover a wonderful, serendipitous, entertaining and delightful event. This walk had taken us to where the Tehachapi Pops Orchestra was putting on their Halloween Spooktacular. We were invited in and completely taken by how all the decorations and musical instruments had modernized what used to be the old Moose Lodge....

  • Advice I would give my younger self

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Oct 14, 2023

I know we get smarter as we get older. We become more clever like the wise old owl in a child’s storybook. What makes us wiser? One could say the extra lines and wrinkles on our face and the aches and pains that we feel in our body is the price we pay for our life experiences. Certainly, over the years we have acquired a lot of knowledge and have become wiser. So how can we put this knowledge to work? There are many ways, but one idea that could be fun, is to create a note, a newsletter or a book and call it : Advice I would give my younger s...

  • An alien in Tehachapi

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Sep 30, 2023

Alien, by definition, means foreigner. I have been an alien visiting Tehachapi for over 20 years. It has become the place I escape to for a sense of nature and normalcy. I love the peaks and valleys of the sometimes green, sometimes brown, and sometimes white landscape. The epic wildflowers give me a childlike excitement when they briefly reveal their colors. The scant dusting of winter white fascinates me. To see it, makes me feel like a child with the promise that Santa Claus is coming to...

  • Did the kid get it right?

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Jun 10, 2023

I am an active minded person. I often fill my head with many ideas (sometimes at most inconvenient times, like when I am trying to go to sleep). Often times, these ideas won’t leave my mind alone. It feels like they are stuck in my head like a warm piece of gum on the bottom of my shoe. It is hard to get rid of! Chances are this has happened to you. These thoughts that plague me are about what I need to do or things I want to happen. I don’t’ know what you do, but sometimes I will turn on the TV to help me relax. One sleepless night I was tryin...

  • The intelligence of natural consequences

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Mar 18, 2023

There are natural consequences in life. Like when we put our hand on a hot stove we will surely get burnt, or when we step on a kid’s toy with bare feet, it can leave a mark, not to mention it can really hurt! From those two examples we will be more careful when we are near the stove and we will (hopefully) look where we are walking the next time. We can even look at things that are more severe like when we go over the speed limit in a car. If we get caught, we will have to pay a speeding ticket and then our insurance goes up. Yikes! We d...

  • Obligation free, peace of mind

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Nov 12, 2022

"I am not a camper" ... I heard myself say for over 25 years. When people would talk about their camping trips I would nod agreeably and remark how nice that was for them. To be honest, I was not interested! This did not mean I did not like nature. I absolutely enjoyed a beautiful view, going to the beach, walks in the park, biking and other nature infused trips on a small scale. I had no interest in bug bites, bedrock sleeping in a tent, whether it was in a sleeping bag, or on a rickety cot. In...

  • A reason to smile

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Apr 2, 2022

When I see a baby deer it makes me smile. I admire its fresh new face with its big brown eyes, and large fuzzy ears. I think any baby animal makes most of us smile, we may even feel a spring of hope! Even in the most dire of circumstances, a new baby softens us. It really doesn't matter if it is a deer, a puppy or a human baby, there is the emotion of joy. The relaxed look and grin on our face indicates hope, joy or anything thing else. There is always the cuteness factor of a baby that makes...

  • A visit to a restaurant that changed my life!

    Robin Ray, contributing writer|Apr 10, 2021

The long and meandering road took its final turn at a quaint fenced cottage. This cottage was a restaurant. I thought it was so charming, so I took a picture of it. We walked into the cafe and the room was filled with the delicious, savory smells of baked goods. Somewhere in my brain, this smell was familiar, but I dismissed it. Then I saw a large, vintage pastry display case filled with the goodies. My brain sent me another familiar signal. At this point, I began looking around. Then the...
