  • Life on Old Town Road at the White Feather Ranch

Jon Hammond, Land of Four Seasons|Mar 14, 2020

Our family moved to Tehachapi in 1930 when my parents, Julius and Jeanne Fritz, swapped their home in Willowbrook for 47 acres of land and a farmhouse on Old Town Road, which had been there about 10 years at that time and was known as "the Burton place." The property was dominated by an enormous Gray Pine (Pinus sabiniana) and my Dad wanted to name the place "Lone Tree Ranch" but someone else was already using that name so he settled on the "White Feather Ranch," because he immediately started...

  • The case of the missing earring

Jon Hammond, Land of Four Seasons|Mar 14, 2020

When my daughter Teagan was born, her father gave me a pair of 1-carat diamond earrings to commemorate her birth. They are the most meaningful pieces of jewelry I have because they represent Teagan to me, and all the wonderful things she's brought to my life. Her father and I are no longer married but those are my "Teagan earrings" and I wear them all the time. Recently I was cleaning out the rental unit where we had been living after most of our things had already been moved into the new...

    Nick Smirnoff, NPPA|Mar 14, 2020

What does Antonio Vivaldi and his passion of the Earth's four seasons; Richard Wagner and his love for his wife Cosima; and the 250th Birthday of Ludwig Van Beethoven all have in common? A wonderful musical performance of their works was performed by the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra at their annual spring concert on March 1 under the baton of David Newby. The afternoon started with Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll." It was written as a surprise birthday composition for his wife, Cosima. It was far,...

  • Leave Healthy, Not Hungover

    Mar 14, 2020

Ginger. Seems people love it or hate it. Those who love it tell those in the other camp that, "it's an acquired taste." Those who hate it say, "I have no desire to acquire a taste for that." There are those who have never had ginger, so they don't know which group they'd be in and then there are those wondering why in the world they would even want to try it. When we speak of ginger we're referring to the rhizome of the ginger plant. This spicy root has been used for hundreds of years in teas,...

  • Heartworm disease in Tehachapi

    Beverly Billingsley, DVM|Mar 14, 2020

Recently a local Tehachapi dog has tested positive for heartworm disease. This dog was born, raised and has never traveled out of the area. What this indicates is that there is now a population of heartworm infected dogs here in Tehachapi and there is a species of mosquito that can transmit the infection to other dogs or cats. According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council, Bakersfield was in the top ten U.S. cities for the highest percentage increase of positive heartworm tests for August 2018. In 2019 the American Heartworm Society...

  • Happy March

    Mel White|Mar 14, 2020

March is one of my favorite months. In like a lion, out like a lamb – the weather is always wild and unpredictable. Softball practice starts but is often snowed out; tulips and crocuses pop up and then get snowed on. Clocks change. Everything seems a little wonky until we all adjust. And it's Women's History Month, during which time I always learn something about the many women who came before me and who helped shape the world as we know it. Not to mention the ones who are making history today i...

  • Web browser notifications and about:blank

    Greg Cunningham|Mar 14, 2020

I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time, letting websites show notifications about new messages and emails, even when the browser is closed. But somehow, somewhere along the way, websites started abusing the notifications feature. If you visit a web page just once, to read an article or check on a sale, that site can pop up notification messages to you. Honestly, it can be, best case, annoying and, worst case, unproductive. But we do have tools to manage those pesky browser...

  • Adopting a new dog

    Ann Carroll|Mar 14, 2020

Maybe it has been a long time since you adopted or rescued a new pet. In the time you had your prior dog, you have probably forgotten how scared he was and how long he took to settle into your home. You have also probably forgotten how panicky you felt, especially that first night thinking, "Oh no – what have I done? I'll get NO sleep tonight; he's going back tomorrow!" But luckily, you hung in there, you gave him time, patience and love, and before long the whole family loved him and he was you...

  • The melody's familiar

    Pat Gracey|Mar 14, 2020

I remember listening to the radio. Each program had a sponsor that paid to be mentioned at intervals during the program. Some of the products being touted by the advertisers had really cute musical songs attached to them. They were called "jingles." It takes me back to the summer of 1942. I was walking down the street with a friend as we sang a jingle about Pepsi-Cola hitting the spot. To preface it with a little history will make the story worth telling. At that time one could buy a 6-ounce...
