  • Putting the lid on Santa Claus

    Bill Mead, contributing writer|Nov 18, 2023

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill MeadReprinted with permission. I have put aside my efforts to close the ozone hole to deal with a more urgent problem. My wife says we must decide how much stuff we can give our grandkids without spoiling them. You whippersnappers who lack third-generation progeny have no inkling how weighty this matter is. Like managing the national debt, it is a question with no good answers-only bad ones and worse ones. As Grandma and Grandpa see it, doling out...

  • The legacy of Thanksgiving

    Fr. Wes Clare, contributing writer|Nov 18, 2023

We live in an amazing country. Despite all the political junk going on these days and the worries about our future as a nation, we still have the right to speak our mind with others, the right to defend ourselves, the right to gather with whom we choose, the right to travel where we like and the right to vote for our elected officials, among other rights. To be sure, these and other rights may be at risk in the near future, so voting in our elections is more important these days than ever before. Nonetheless, our country is the one everyone...

  • Fall with John the Plumber

    John the Plumber|Sep 23, 2023

Sept. 23 is the official first day of fall. It's a date that marks when the sun is exactly above the equator and day and night are of equal length. For those less interested in astronomy, fall signifies the beginning of the holiday season. For plumbers it means lots of panicked customers needing help with clogged sinks and toilets, particularly around Thanksgiving and Christmas. John Nelson, owner of John the Plumber, is no stranger to these calls. "Around the shop we don't call the day after...

  • An apple a day...

    Lily La B, contributing writer|Sep 23, 2023

With the annual Tehachapi Apple Festival on Oct. 14-15 this year, I thought it would be fun to take a look at apples in history. The mother of all apple stories, of course, is in the Bible with Eve plucking the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and getting herself and Adam tossed out of Eden. The Bible doesn't specify that the fruit was an apple, and according to Wikipedia it could have been an apple, grape, fig, pomegranate or even a banana. In Western Europe the...
