  • Creative magic – the healing power of art

    Judith Campanaro|Aug 18, 2018

The beauty and concept of art surrounds us on a daily basis. Mother Earth, the greatest artist of all, fills our hearts and souls with her mountains, forests, lakes, sunsets and snowflakes. But sometimes, life seems so busy we hardly have time to notice the wonders around us. I invite you to allow the creative process to help you rediscover the importance of simple serenity. As an art educator, I have heard many people say, "I've always wanted to do art but I can't even draw a straight line."...

    Aug 18, 2018

Lillian Virginia Tanner, better known as Virginia, Gennie, Mom, Grandma, or lately Granny, passed away on May 11, 2018. She was 83 years old. Virginia was born on May 6, 1935, to parents Robert and Lida (Jones) Toney. She had one sister, Laura, and two brothers, Robert and George. There was also a baby sister that died within days of her birth. Mom always mourned her loss. The family lived in a small four-room house overlooking a beautiful mountainside in West Virginia. There was a wood-burning...

  • Making community a priority

    Julianna Crisalli|Aug 18, 2018

There are so many things in Tehachapi that remind me of my dad. The wildflowers, the people, the open and endless sky at dusk. But nothing quite brings him back to me like the gentle hum of a mountain dulcimer. I woke up to a lovely surprise a couple of weeks ago. Fiddlers Crossing, Tehachapi's local gathering place for beautiful concerts and art, posted on Facebook a preview of their upcoming mountain dulcimer concert with Steve Eulberg and Erin Mae Lewis. I already planned on attending the con...

  • Meet Your New Neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Aug 18, 2018

Dieter and Connie Brehm began visiting Tehachapi in 2016 when their son, Ernie, who is a Kern County firefighter, moved here. During weekend visits Dieter and Connie became acquainted with the Tehachapi area and grew to appreciate its beauty, sense of community and quiet lifestyle. With retirement on the horizon, they considered Tehachapi an option, and began a home search that culminated with the purchase of a property in the Old Town area. They made their move to Tehachapi permanent this sprin...

  • New businesses approved by Planning Commission

    Pat Doody|Aug 18, 2018

  • Analogies

    Greg Cunningham|Aug 18, 2018

Technical stuff can be complicated, so I use analogies to help explain technical stuff in ways non-technical people can understand. CPUs, hard drive space and RAM, browsers and home pages CPUs CPU stands for Central Processing Unit, your CPU is the "engine" in your device (computer, smartphone or tablet) that does work. CPUs are also called processors, because hey, let's make all of this just a bit more confusing, shall we? Companies make different processors for different devices. For...

  • Journey to Griffith Park

    Mark Fisher, Doc|Aug 18, 2018

Last fall we tried to go to Griffith Park to see the observatory. Emphasis on the "tried" part. The GPS took us there, though some of the roads were narrow. Well they felt narrow at least. And when we got there we were unable to find any parking. We actually drove far enough away that while we could still see the observatory, it was tiny and too far for us to walk to, at least up those hills. So we gave up and said we'd try again someday. Well, someday did come. We had noticed while we were...

    Julianna Crisalli|Aug 18, 2018

The streets of downtown Tehachapi were bright with color after the 2018 Chalk on the Walk on Aug. 11. Artists of all ages began claiming their 4 by 4-foot section of sidewalk canvas along Tehachapi Boulevard and Green Street at 7:30 a.m. It didn't take long for beautiful art to appear. Lucas graduated from high school this year and is...

  • Wiener Run all-star keeps running

    Julianna Crisalli|Aug 18, 2018

When he's not winning races, he's playing with his favorite toys -- squeaky ones. And playing, by his request, means ripping the squeakers out of them. Rango, named after Johnny Depp's chameleon character in the movie with the same name, is a four-time champion of the Wiener Run during Tehachapi's All-American 4th of July Hot Dog Festival. This year, with changes to the fourth celebrations, the wiener dog race didn't happen. But Rango's mom and dad found him a new venue. On July 5, he won first...

  • Flying in a rare Fieseler Storch

    Cathy Hansen|Aug 18, 2018

Steve Ericson gave a great presentation at Plane Crazy Saturday last month. He spoke about new aircraft he had designed and old aircraft he had restored. One of the historic aircraft he used to own was a World War II Fieseler Fi 156 "Storch." (Translated: Stork). I remember a beautiful clear November day back in 2003 when I had a wonderful opportunity to fly with Steve in his very rare German aircraft at Mojave Airport. At the time, there were only two flyable in the U.S. The Storch was one of...

  • Sometimes it pays to say YES!

    Mel White|Aug 18, 2018

I was stressed and tired one night. Things were crazy at the store, my car was acting funny and I'd had a fight with a friend the night before. My dogs seemed particularly demanding that evening, and the cat seemed particularly whiney and needy. I had a headache. I wanted to hide and mope and feel sorry for myself. But a friend called and said she had an extra ticket to a play I'd never heard of, and would I like to go with her? My brain quickly came up with a list of excuses, and then for some...

    Pat Gracey|Aug 18, 2018

Years ago when one traveled to Bakersfield over U.S. Highway 466, it involved going down what is known as the "Old Road" which, at one time was the only way one could travel to Bakersfield. To navigate this historic route today, one must proceed west on Highway 202 for nearly three-miles, then turn right on Woodford-Tehachapi Road. This will put you on the old road that we all traveled moving northwest, down past Keene and into the great San Joaquin Valley. On this route, leaving the Tehachapi...

  • The best ideas often come from listening

    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|Aug 18, 2018

The business of the City isn't always conducted at City Hall or City Council meetings. Matter of fact, much of what is done to benefit the citizens and the community is conducted at a variety of meetings and networking opportunities, many that take place right here in Tehachapi. Take emergency preparedness and response for example. Just last week the Kern Operational Area Advisory Committee met at the Tehachapi Police Department as first responders and Kern County Emergency Operations Center sta...
