  • Sky's the limit for local Build-a-Plane project

    Mark La Ciura|Jul 4, 2020

Paul Nafziger of the Tehachapi Society of Pilots' Build-a-Plane student project was kind enough to ask me to witness the taxi test and engine run-up for the project airplane on June 29. As a pilot I was jazzed to be there, and it was great to see Paul run up the engine to 2760 RPMs and taxi the Zenith aircraft. It was cool to see all the pre-flight checks and watch one of the students checking the fuel for water and any particulates in the fuel. Many experienced members of the Society of Pilots...

  • What's Up in Bear Valley Springs?

    Linda Coverdale|Jul 4, 2020

By the time you read this, July 4th will have come and gone. Our annual Hot air balloons will be here but tethered and not taking up passengers. The Meet-the-Candidates meeting for the Association took place on Wednesday, June 24 at the Whiting Center. Two returning members are on the ballot —Monique Herbst and Peggy Bergman-Smith. Bergman-Smith was an appointee when Larry Thompson left the board. Since three spots were available, though, and only two people were running, two more people have expressed interest. Long time board member, Todd L...

  • As our routines change ... again!

    Ann Carroll|Jul 4, 2020

Now that we are having our lives change from total quarantine lockdown to little ventures out as some businesses open and some of us even go back to work, we at Have A Heart Humane Society have a few concerns. Our pets have been used to our being home and around for close to three-and-a-half months. Now while this may have irritated your cats (haha), your dogs have LOVED it! They may have a little trouble understanding or adjusting to your new hours away from home. Try to keep giving your pets that little bit of extra attention when you get...

    Greg Cunningham|Jul 4, 2020

Whether you're treating yourself to a new computer (yay for you!) or your old computer is old and slow (are you getting calls from the Smithsonian about donating to the museum?), you have a decision to make. Windows or Mac Operating System (OS). For most people, it's not a tough choice; stick with what you have and know. But maybe, just maybe, you're looking over the fence at that green grass on "the other side" of the Windows vs. Mac debate and wondering...should I? Most of the stuff we do...

  • Timing is everything

    Pat Gracey|Jul 4, 2020

I entered into a conversation with someone who had another earthquake story. We have read a good many interesting tales, but wait until you hear Josephine Renteria Serda's story. She and I spoke for over an hour recalling the fateful day of the Tehachapi Quake but we also found we had much in common, such as age, being native Californians, both husbands having served in the military as well as our sharing an earthquake together; she in Keene and I in Tehachapi. She said it first, but I was in...

  • Mojave Air & Spaceport's CV-990 Gate Guard

    Cathy Hansen|Jul 4, 2020

An interesting program was on the History Channel back in 2004 and it involved Mojave Airport's CV-990 Gate Guard. The big jet parked at the Highway 58 entrance to Mojave Air & Spaceport has an impressive history related to the Space Shuttle. When first introduced in 1962, the CV-990 Coronado was billed as the world's fastest subsonic airliner. I remember being there to see the last flight of the Convair 990 (CV-990) aircraft from Edwards, formerly used by NASA as a medium-altitude research plat...

  • Freedom for all

    Mel White|Jul 4, 2020

As a kid I loved the Fourth of July, even though I didn't really understand what it was all about. The Fourth of July meant big picnics on the farm in Iowa with extended family, playing with the cousins outside all day, watching the uncles set off fire works in the evening and us kids running around the yard with sparklers. Oh, and we always had homemade ice cream. As a teen I loved the Fourth of July because in my small Iowa town there was always a parade (I was in the marching band) and a...

    Jon Hammond|Jul 4, 2020

A small dark green shrub flourishes in the Tehachapi Mountains, growing among California Junipers in drier locations. You may be familiar with this plant in connection with cold medication and diet pills, but Tehachapi Indian people have used it to make tea for many hundreds of years. This is a plant with a hundred different names: Indian tea, Mormon tea, sheepherders tea, Spanish tea, cowboy tea and many others. The local Nuwä (Kawaiisu or Paiute) people call it "Tu-tu-pivi" while botanists...

  • Yellow Starthistle

    Laurie Rude Betts|Jul 4, 2020

A very obnoxious weed with a pretty name: Yellow Starthistle (YST). This scourge on the land of the western U.S. was discovered in the Tehachapi area and Bear Valley Springs in 1990 by Chuck McCollough (founder of Triassic Legacy Winery). In Northern California yellow starthistle is out of control, wasting up to 15 million acres of range and farm land. We do not want it to get any more out of control here. This very invasive weed is unpleasant, as it has sharp needles around each flower, which...

  • So what's new with you?

    Mark Fisher|Jul 4, 2020

This has been some year hasn't it? Anyone remember the "murder hornets" from a few months ago? No? Well the Friends of the Library do, as well as all the plans we had for the year. Things sure haven't gone as expected. But we're back and still working to support our Library. Even if book donations and sales don't all happen this year (we still need to figure out how to be able to do that safely). It's open again you know. But like everything else, still not back to normal. It's here to support t...
