  • Get to know your local Farmers Insurance team

    Ginger Patz, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

The one year mark has been reached; my name has been on the building for a whole year. "Farmers Insurance Ginger Patz Agency" still feels weird. Not to mention how the insurance industry has been weird, too. So many changes, ups and downs, it's impossible to predict how much premiums will be or if and when they will ever go back down. Just as I took over, every insurance carrier made drastic changes. To top it off, multiple companies all decided to update their online systems and software,...

Recently, the BVS CSD, under the guidance of VP Martin Hernandez, pronounced our community a Purple Heart Community, honoring Purple Heart recipients James Rice, a double-award recipient, and Pancho Colon. A sign was made to post at the gate to the community to greet all who enter. On May 10, a ceremony took place in which the two named recipients, plus a third who was a previous resident, were honored. David Hernandez was a past Bear Valley Springs member and attended the event. Recently a...

  • Tree removal at Railroad Park

    May 28, 2024

The two large cottonwood trees at Railroad Park were removed based on recommendations made by an arborist contracted by the City. Our Public Works Department noticed the trees were becoming more and more unhealthy with large branches and limbs snapping off and posing a significant safety hazard to people using the park. The roots of the trees were also destroying the landscaping and posed another safety concern; the circumference of the two trees had already been chained off for some time to...

  • Remembering and honoring

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

The weather has turned (mostly) nice lately, and many of us have been eagerly awaiting Memorial Day Weekend to officially kick off the outdoor summer season. It may be the weekend you start on your garden or plant the flower boxes; it may be a good time for a long motorcycle or horseback ride, or a lazy session on the porch in a rocker with a good book. It might be the weekend of your first seasonal camping trip. That’s all well and good, but along with all the celebration of longer days and sum...

  • Remembering our friend, aviation legend Dick Rutan

    Cathy Hansen, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

Word was received that our pilot friend, Dick Rutan, passed away on May 3 and it saddened all of us at Mojave Air & Space Port at "Rutan Field." What a wonderful inspiration he was to generations of aviation enthusiasts. His spirit will live on at the airport where he flew and trained others in the joy of flight. He gave many young people their first ride in an airplane and for most of them, it propelled them into a career of aviation. He enjoyed talking to kids (of all ages) and encouraging...

  • Is it spring yet?

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|May 28, 2024

Tehachapi is not known for an easy or speedy spring. While most of California basks in early flowers, Tehachapi is whipped with winds and a threat of frost for those impatient to plant gardens early. Today as I look outside, the bushes at my windows have finally budded, the row of poplars across the street are resounding like ocean waves as winds rush through their fresh new leaves and last but not least, the mighty oaks have lazily stretched their limbs accepting the inevitable. Spring has...

  • 8 benefits of an adjustable base

    Dawn House|May 28, 2024

One of the primary benefits of an adjustable base is the ability to customize your sleep position for a quality night's sleep. 1. Easier breathing. By adjusting the position of your adjustable bed, you can find the ideal angle to help ease discomfort, reduce snoring, and alleviate symptoms of sleep apnea. Elevating the upper body can open your airway, promoting better airflow and reducing the interruptions in breathing that are common with sleep apnea. 2. Relief of acid reflux. An adjustable...

  • It's all about that bass...eventually

    Nohawk Rob, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

As a musician, no one I know actually set out to be a bass guitarist. In my teens, everyone wanted to be the lead singer, lead guitarist or the drummer. They wanted to be the front man, the wailing guitarist or the wild man drummer. But I don't recall anyone saying, "I just want to be the bass player." The Southern Rock bands that had so many guitarists to choose from, used to make the worst one play bass. My favorite (not!) quote when people approach me..."Bass must be easy, there's only four...

  • End of life discussions and why

    Jason Wheeler, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

Although it is a difficult conversation, I always encourage families to discuss end of life decisions, even if they are a young family. The truth is tomorrow is not promised to anyone of any age. Informing loved ones of your wishes, even if it’s verbal only, can alleviate a great deal of stress on them should you pass unexpectedly. Too often I have sat with families who have no clue what their loved one wished for in their end-of-life decisions. This, on many occasions, has led to squabbling among family members which inevitably leads to e...

In January of this year Erin Gates moved to Tehachapi from Eureka, California, where she had been Deputy Superintendent at Redwoods National and State Parks. She had two weeks to find a home before starting her new position as Superintendent of the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument, located in Keene. The grounds and museum, where Chavez made his home, became part of the National Park Service during the administration of President Barack Obama. Erin grew up in Glendale, California. She says that...

  • My days on 'The Rat Patrol' set

    Bob Alvis, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

I was thinking the other day about things that happened around Edwards when I was a kid, and many of you would be surprised just how diverse that experience was. Case in point: I was good friends with Tim and Jeff Geisen. Their father, Walt Geisen, was a major player at General Electric over the years. One morning during summer break, I got a call from Tim, who said his mom June had something fun for us to do if my dad could pick us up after he got off work. Game on! We worked out the details...

  • Update on the Tehachapi Murals Project

    The Loop, staff|May 28, 2024

The murals in Downtown Tehachapi are in need of repair. The most obvious is the 1915 Green Street Dance mural on Tehachapi Blvd., across from Railroad Park. Unfortunately, the binding agent on the mural is failing and the stucco is falling. As a result, it needs to be removed. This led to the creation of the Tehachapi Murals Project, which will evaluate each mural, and have them cleaned and resealed by the end of fall. Current members of the Tehachapi Murals Project are Charles White, Lyn...

We were on our way home from vacation and decided to spend our last night in Tehachapi and have another delicious dinner at Jake’s Steakhouse! We want to thank them for their generosity! – The Kraemer’s...
