We had a fantastic turn out of 262 cars preregistered at the Thunder on the Mountain Car Show. The weather cooperated with some clouds but the temps were cool, perfect for walking around the streets of Tehachapi on Oct. 1. Tehachapi Hometown Christmas is on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on S. Green Street. At the Oct. 2 City Council meeting, Development Services Director Jay Schlosser introduced Tehachapi's new City Planner Salvador Morales and announced that Andrew Norton has been promoted to the position of City Engineer. The Tehachapi City Council approved by unanimous vote on Sept. 18 to launch a new sign grant program for city of Tehachapi businesses. The program is a re-creation of a former Downtown Sign Program that was started in the early 2000s. At the August meeting of the Golden Hills Community Service District (GHCSD), the Board of Directors unanimously appointed Christopher Carlson as General Manager of the District. On October 3, Eldon (Don) Kordes peacefully passed at his home in Bear Valley Springs at the age of 98. Don was born in Parkville, Missouri growing up on a farm and working in his dad's mechanic garage. As a senior in high school, he was drafted to serve in WWII. He entered the Navy's V-12 program at Notre Dame University to become an engineer for a battle ship. When Helen McAllister retired and moved to Tehachapi, interest in history inspired her to paint some of the historic buildings in the area. The paintings were much admired, so Helen featured them on note cards which she sold for several years. In 1995, Helen began donating paintings to the owners of the buildings represented.
