  • Having the last word – great epitaphs

    Sheila Zanghi, contributing writer|Apr 13, 2024

As a child I was fascinated by epitaphs. Epitaphs are the words found on graves’ headstones. Some were sad, some were thoughtful and some were funny. I remember in my seventh-grade English class we covered epitaphs, and I became intrigued by them. The epitaphs themselves gave insight into the life of the deceased or what people thought of them. Some gave information on their demise while others seemed to just want to get on with it. My mom had a book of epitaphs and had memorized several herself...

I love the work that I do. I have made many friends here in Tehachapi since I started my business in 2001. That is when I moved up here and met Ted Kitzmiller. Ted was the owner of Radio Shack in Old Town. Chelley, his wife, was taking a picture editing class from me and said that her husband needed some computer services at his store. When I met Ted, he showed me the trouble he was having and I took care of them for him. We struck up a conversation about my background in the IT field and asked...

  • Snow and smiles

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Apr 13, 2024

As I’m writing this, it is early April and outside it’s snowing. Well, it’s not just snowing, it is blizzarding – snow is coming down fastly and furiously and the mighty wind is blowing it sideways. I was pretty surprised when I got up this morning to see that it had snowed overnight, although snow had been in the weather predictions (it’s April, after all). It was snowing lightly still when I arose, and sticking on the ground, and the fog was so bad I couldn’t see the mountains that are ri...

  • Movies you did not know were filmed in Kern County

    Mark La Ciura, contributing writer|Apr 13, 2024

Kern County has been the filming location to a list of fantastic and well-known, and not-so-fantastic and not-so-well-known flicks. The 1939 film "Stagecoach" is at the top of the list for me, as well as the 1959 film "North by Northwest." I think most film buffs will remember a low-level flying sequence done with a "crop duster" biplane filmed on Garces Highway in Bakersfield. This famous Hitchcock film was shot in October of 1958. Early on the producers wanted to film this sequence in a...
