Chris Naftel gives a colorful presentation to Rotary.

At the March 27 Tehachapi Rotary meeting, the speaker was Rotary Treasurer Chris Naftel.

Chris worked for NASA for over 36 years, and since his retirement in 2015 he enjoys traveling, scuba diving and photography. He gave an interesting and colorful presentation on underwater photography, highlighting photographs taken on recent trips to Cozumel, Mexico and Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean, with his wife and dive partner, Dody. Chris learned to dive about 10 years ago on a trip to Guam, and in that time he has made 582 ocean dives.

Chris began his presentation by explaining some of the planning, logistics and equipment needed in planning a dive trip. In addition, he talked about the science behind underwater photography, as the diffusion of light changes with the depth of the water. It was fascinating how one cannot see the vivid colors underwater; only the use of a flash reveals the beautiful colors of the fish, coral and sponges found in the reef. He wowed the club with many beautiful pictures of sea creatures and said that one of his favorite experiences is to come across an animal he has never seen before, then research to identify and learn about it.

He also shared some entertaining stories, including his encounter with a green moray eel!

In appreciation of Chris Naftel's presentation, President Jennifer Palakiko presented him with a certificate, and a $100 donation was made to the Rotary Foundation in his name.
