    Madeline Ruebush, contributing writer|Oct 29, 2022

My name is Madeline and I've started a community garden with the Tehachapi Humanitarian Relief group. We've started the garden in The Village Tehachapi's backyard, 101 East H Street, but still need lots of help to keep it going. We will also be partnering with the Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District to expand our garden into downtown, so watch for updates on that! How can you help us? Donations: Help us pay for or donate the supplies we need. This includes manure, untreated wood, fall/spring...

  • Tehachapi has a new, exciting attraction – we finally have a community garden!

    Madeline Ruebush, contributing writer|Oct 1, 2022

Last summer I had the aspiration to start a community garden. The Tehachapi Humanitarian Relief Group reached out to me. They run a food pantry in the backyard of The Village Tehachapi and said they would love to host a community garden, as well. I thought finding a space to actualize my dreams would take months and months. After some discussion and communication and back and forth, our first event as the Tehachapi Community Garden happened on Aug. 12 and 13. We cleaned up the backyard of The...

    Madeline Ruebush, contributing writer|Jun 25, 2022

This last season, Tehachapi had two basketball champions. Koree Rodden and Jaelyn Dock are 8th graders who competed in the Kern County All Stars Tournament and won. Each school can choose two students to compete in this tournament and Koree and Jaelyn were both chosen by JMS. Although they did not win that game, they were invited back by the tournament hosts to play again, and they won! But this success has not come without a lot of hard work. Both girls first got into basketball a few years...

    Madeline Ruebush, contributing writer|Jun 11, 2022

COVID-19 has interrupted a lot of plans the past couple of years. The Fishing Derby that usually takes place at Brite Lake has again been cancelled this year. But that hasn't stopped Tehachapi Valley Recreation & Parks District (TVRPD) from providing citizens with events that ensure a good time. This year, Free Fish Day replaced the Fishing Derby. Before Free Fish Day, which was on May 21, the fish had to be added to the lake. Early in the morning, two days before, a shipment of fish came from t...

  • Errea House garden dedication ceremony

    Madeline Ruebush, contributing writer|Jun 11, 2022

The Errea House garden is officially back on the job. On May 28 a dedication ceremony was held where the garden's story was told and thanks were given to those who helped bring the garden to life. When the volunteers at the Tehachapi Heritage League organization learned that property where the former garden was planted was purchased and would be used commercially, they didn't know what they would do. While they wanted to buy the property, the for-sale sign was up for less than 24 hours. This...

    Madeline Ruebush, contributing writer|Apr 30, 2022

Written by Ken Ludwig, "Moon Over Buffalo" features eight amazing cast members, including crowd favorites: Andi Hicks and Jamie Uhtof. The play is directed by David Strestrum who has expertly timed all the gags and fast-paced action. He had this to say in an interview with Johnna Palmer, "It is one of the funniest plays I have ever seen, heard or read. It is Neil Simon on steroids." Set in 1950s Buffalo, the play features two expiring Broadway actors: Charlotte Hay and George Hay in their quest...

  • Meet the Valley Oaks Interact Club

    Madeline Ruebush, contributing writer|Apr 16, 2022

Schools have typically been a place for kids and teens to explore their interests and learn new skills. Outside of the classroom, clubs provide more opportunities for students to learn and grow. Meet the Valley Oaks Interact Club, the teens of Tehachapi that are working to better their school and community. Sponsored by the Tehachapi Rotary Club, the Interact Club holds meetings every other Thursday and is adult-led by the Valley Oaks science teacher Nena Thornburg and Judy Trujillo, the Rotary...
