Tehachapi has a new, exciting attraction – we finally have a community garden!

Last summer I had the aspiration to start a community garden. The Tehachapi Humanitarian Relief Group reached out to me. They run a food pantry in the backyard of The Village Tehachapi and said they would love to host a community garden, as well.

I thought finding a space to actualize my dreams would take months and months. After some discussion and communication and back and forth, our first event as the Tehachapi Community Garden happened on Aug. 12 and 13. We cleaned up the backyard of The Village Tehachapi to get ready for a garden.

This last weekend, on Sept. 23 and 24, we held our second event where we built a raised bed and planted donations from Mountain Gardens Nursery & Pet. We had a nice turnout of volunteers and were able to get all of the work done relatively fast. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

We are also happy to announce that we will be teaming up with the Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District (TVHD) to expand our garden into downtown. We will be located in the empty lot next to the physical therapy building on West F Street. This project is just beginning, but we are happy that we have acquired so much support already.

We hope you come and join us at our next event!

The garden is located at 101 E. H St., Tehachapi, in the backyard. To contact us, email madeline.ruebush12@gmail.com or call us at (310) 927-9245. To contact the humanitarian group, email tehachapihumanitarian@gmail.com or call at (661) 771-7202.
