  • Day Trippin' to the borax mine in Boron

    Mel White, contributing writer|Mar 19, 2022

Gas prices have soared these past couple of weeks so last Saturday I opted for an outing not too far from home. I took a drive out to Boron, only 45-ish miles from Tehachapi, and treated myself to a visit to the Rio Tinto Borax Mine just north of that town. As a kid I loved watching "Death Valley Days" on television in the 50s, and I remember well that the program was sponsored by "20-Mule Team Borax." But at the time I had no idea what borax was and, to be honest, at the time I was too young...

Joining FOTD were members of Tehachapi City Council, City Manager Greg Garrett and former caboose owner Hans Kahl. FOTD had wanted to buy the caboose for many years but owner Kahl, who also owns the Gold Coast Station train store in Tehachapi, wasn't ready to sell it. This year Kahl approached FOTD saying he had received another offer but...

  • Ashmore Motors to expand to a second location

    Pat Doody, staff writer|Mar 19, 2022

Ashmore Motors has been Tehachapi's only auto sales location since 2014 when Marlon Ashmore and his son Brandon opened their lot on South Street. Now, almost eight years later, their lot is still full of various makes and models of used cars and, more and more often, recreational vehicles, including large motorhomes. "We thought about expanding before COVID," said Marlon, "but the pandemic short-circuited that idea. The large motorhomes are difficult to maneuver on our lot so we recently...

  • Teens With a Purpose

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Mar 19, 2022

I had the privilege of speaking with a trio of 17-year-old girls who throw negative teen stereotypes out the window. You may already have heard of some of them - it's hard to hide bright stars of promise in a small town like ours. Layla Lujan, along with her brother Milo, was named 2021 Citizen of the Year by the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce and Tehachapi News, in part for starting and working in the Sunday Soup For the Soul soup kitchen at The Shed restaurant since 2018. Trinity...

    Diana Frieling, contributing writer|Mar 19, 2022

Did you ever have one of those dreams where you wake up and you are not sure if you were dreaming? I have been feeling this way since the beginning of COVID. Here at the ranch things seem normal. Our routine hasn't changed. We work hard to make sure the animals get the best care we can give them. But it has felt like something has been missing, and you know what? It has. With COVID restrictions and all the craziness of this world, we have missed you. The animals have missed you. And that is why...

  • What's Up in Bear Valley Springs?

    Linda Coverdale, contributing writer|Mar 19, 2022

Spring is close. Daffodils are blooming, and even some poppies. Leaves will soon be bursting out on the trees. Before those leaves start showing their colors, check your oaks for mistletoe. Sometimes it’s subtle, with just a hint of a clump here and there. Some oak trees in our community are horrifically infested. A bad mistletoe infection will kill your trees and spread to your neighbors’ trees. Some varieties are more subject to mistletoe. We have blue oaks on our own property and some val...

  • Jeanette Crounse – talented and inspirational

    Judith Campanaro, contributing writer|Mar 19, 2022

"A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words." While attending a gathering of the American Association of University Women, I noticed a striking woman across the room with purple streaks in her hair. I knew immediately she was someone I wanted to meet. Jeanette Crounse is a person you will never forget. Remember the 1959 R&B song "Personality" by Lloyd Price? "You've got personality (walk), personality (talk), personality...

The event was originally pushed back from April to May due to the water allocation levels. TVRPD has high expectations for our events. We do not want to host an event knowing...

As an individual investor, should you take some type of action? It’s helpful to put today’s headlines in perspective. While the Federal Reserve probably will raise interest rates, they are doing so from a point where these rates wer...

  • What's a G between friends?

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Mar 19, 2022

If we're talking about Wi-Fi, then the G stands for gigahertz. Wi-Fi networks are like radio stations in that they broadcast signals to be picked up by other Wi-Fi devices. Like radio stations, Wi-Fi radios broadcast on radio frequencies, either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. That whole GHz thing stands for gigahertz, which is one billion hertz. A hertz is one cycle (of something) per second. Heinrich Rudolf Hertz proved the existence of electromagnetic waves in the late 1800s, so they named one cycle after...
