  • Call the doctor

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Apr 27, 2024

When I was a child and we became ill, my mother took over with a few home remedies. If that didn’t work we didn’t exactly call the doctor for in the mid-’30s in Mojave, we had no phone ... not many people did. My brother would be told to run two blocks up the street to Doctor Warner’s office/residence. Dr. Warner would come by in his old two-door Model A Ford sedan. It was officially called the Model A Ford Tudor Sedan. A very handsome automobile, but not the one owned by Dr. Warner. His was...

In between these two May events we have: • The mail by stagecoach. (1832) • The Pony Express. (1860-1861) • The Intercontinental Railroad, driving of the Golden Spike. • Is Spring really here?

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Apr 27, 2024

Whenever anyone asks me what my favorite season is, my stock answer is, whatever season is coming next. That is, if someone asks me that question in summer, my answer will be fall; if someone asks in the middle of fall, the answer will be winter. And, so on. I think, therefore, that I really like all the seasons, but I especially like the fact that they change. I love the beginning of a new season, and then after a month or two, I’m ready for the next one, ready for a change. That’s one rea...

  • New treadmills for Tehachapi Sculpt365 Health Club

    Terry Delamater, RPh, contributing writer|Apr 27, 2024

Last year, manager Casey Thacker informed me that the treadmills at our Tehachapi club needed to be replaced. When asked if we should purchase new Precor treadmills, he showed me a brochure of treadmills made by a company named Woodway. But nothing was said about the cost, which turned out to be double the price ($14,000 each) of competing brands. I agreed to attend the 2024 Fitness Industry Tradeshow in Los Angeles to evaluate the various options, and I simply had to agree that Casey made the...

  • My loved one is going to pass soon, what do I need to be ready for this day?

    Jason Wheeler, contributing writer|Apr 27, 2024

This is a great question and one I hear often. Families usually want to come in right away and prepare. My first response is stay home with your loved one. Time with your loved one is your most precious commodity. I have had instances where families were at the funeral home preparing and their loved one passed away while they were with me. This can be devastating. We can help you begin this difficult process at home and aid you in preparing for a meeting with an arrangement counselor after your loved one has passed. I advise that, instead of co...

  • LifeWave X39 Activation Patches: revolutionizing regenerative medicine

    Claudia Baker, contributing writer|Apr 27, 2024

Stem cells are the foundation of our body’s repair system, versatile cells with the ability to transform into various specialized cell types essential for maintaining our health. However, as we age, the regenerative power of these cells wanes, hampered by genetic factors, environmental stressors and lifestyle choices. At the age of 20, we are endowed with an impressive one billion stem cells. Yet, as the years pass, this reservoir dwindles dramatically: • By age 30: a 60% decline to 400 million. • By age 50: a 75% decline to 250 million. • By...

  • Having the last word – great epitaphs

    Sheila Zanghi, contributing writer|Apr 13, 2024

As a child I was fascinated by epitaphs. Epitaphs are the words found on graves’ headstones. Some were sad, some were thoughtful and some were funny. I remember in my seventh-grade English class we covered epitaphs, and I became intrigued by them. The epitaphs themselves gave insight into the life of the deceased or what people thought of them. Some gave information on their demise while others seemed to just want to get on with it. My mom had a book of epitaphs and had memorized several herself...

  • What's on your altar?

    Healthy Hippie Trading Co.|Apr 13, 2024

Altars can be found at many places of worship, such as temples and shrines, and are commonly associated with paganism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism. An altar is meant to be a sacred space, be it in a house...

  • April wildflower drives

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Apr 13, 2024

It's finally April and that means wildflower season. I'm hoping for a super bloom close to home this year, thanks to all the rain we've had this winter. Of course, you never know – it takes a combination of elements to make a very good year, including temperatures and wind, as well as rainfall, and they must all line up at the right time and in the right order. But no matter what, whether a super bloom or not, we're sure to see a variety of wildflowers this spring. In the lower elevations, l...

I love the work that I do. I have made many friends here in Tehachapi since I started my business in 2001. That is when I moved up here and met Ted Kitzmiller. Ted was the owner of Radio Shack in Old Town. Chelley, his wife, was taking a picture editing class from me and said that her husband needed some computer services at his store. When I met Ted, he showed me the trouble he was having and I took care of them for him. We struck up a conversation about my background in the IT field and asked...
