You may have noticed that the IRS is in a bad way. It has a backlog of millions of unprocessed paper tax returns, and taxpayers can't get through to the agency on the phone. Congress noticed and took action by passing a massive funding of the IRS in the recently enacted Inflation Reduction Act. The IRS will get an additional $80 billion over the next decade. This includes $35 billion for taxpayer services, operations support and business systems. Among other things, the IRS plans to use these fu...

  • Bakersfield Museum of Art

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Dec 31, 2022

If you're feeling the need for a little culture to start off the new year, may I suggest the Bakersfield Museum of Art. It's one of my favorite art museums and the art on display there is worth the trip down the hill. I made the trip a few days before Christmas, and I wish I had gone sooner as two of the current exhibits are only up through Jan. 7, 2023. That means your time to see the ones I'm talking about today are limited, but never fear, there is always great art on display any time you cho...

  • The talk of the town – a 2-1 buydown

    Alysha Boles, contributing writer|Dec 31, 2022

If you have not heard of the term "2-1 buydown," you likely will soon. Like a 1980's fashion trend coming back full circle, loan programs can do the same. This is not at all a new concept, or program but a time in the market that makes, for many, a very smart loan strategy. So what exactly is a 2-1 buydown and is it a good option for your potential loan strategy as a buyer? In reality, a 2-1 buydown is a temporary interest buyout, not a buydown at all. This special temporary reduction in the...

  • Onward into 2023

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Dec 31, 2022

How on earth is it time to write an end-of-the-old year-and-hooray-for-the-New- Year column? How did we get here already? How can it be the end of December when just a couple of weeks ago it was September? How can time fly by so darned fast? Alas, I have no answers as to how it can be. I can only say well, here we are, and ever onward we must go. You see around this time each year I like to write about the excitement of a new year, a new beginning, a chance to start over. About endings and begin...

Now that it's the holiday season, gifts are probably on your mind – and you might intend for some of those gifts to go to charities. However, by donating other types of assets, can you increase the value of y...

  • The foggiest idea (fogged windows in cold weather)

    Protech Auto Service|Dec 31, 2022

In cold weather, you may notice your windows fogging up. Then you can't see where you're going, and suddenly you and those around you are in danger. So, what causes your windows to fog up in cold weather, and how can you stop it? Fog is simply moisture condensing on a cold surface. When the air inside your vehicle is moist and warmer than the outside air, it hits the glass that's cooled by the outside temperature, and you get fog. If your windows fog up, you probably already know to try the...

  • 'A Month After Christmas'

    Bruce Gripkey, contributing writer|Dec 31, 2022

I would like to thank all five of the readers out there that have missed my presence in The Loop newspaper. It has been a long year fraught with numerous stumbles, hurdles and other maladies of life. As we begin a new year, I hope that everyone gets younger, thinner and more financially independent in 2016. For the Christmas issue of The Loop newspaper in 2014, I wrote a little poem titled 'A Train Set For Christmas'. It should be recited out loud in the rhythm and cadence of 'The Night Before C...

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Dec 31, 2022

Have you ever received an email that looked like it came from you, but you didn't send it? Self-spam is happening a lot now, and it's usually tied to a blackmail or shaming scheme. Most email systems don't have security checks to ensure the person in the email's "From" line is who they say they are-with billions of email addresses and thousands of email servers worldwide, verifying that "From" address is impossible. So all an...
