    Jon Hammond|Sep 28, 2019

Autumn has officially started and will now be redecorating the Tehachapi Mountains, changing the broadleaf trees and shrubs from assorted shades of green to a variety of yellows, browns, golds and reds. The longer, colder fall nights bring out the color in both our native and introduced trees. Virginia Creeper, a popular ornamental vine, will soon be a riot of color in Tehachapi, with the more exposed leaves having turned a deep old barn red while the more protected leaves are a dozen different...

At the Tehachapi Audubon’s October meeting, John Rowden will speak to us about Plants for Birds: Growing healthy communities for birds and people together. Audubon’s Bird-friendly Communities conservation strategy is guided by the principle of improving communities all over the country by providing birds with food, shelter, safe passage and places to raise their young. • Meet Your New Neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Sep 28, 2019

Gary and Wendy Perlin both lived in Tehachapi when they were young but never knew each other here. They were living in San Diego and had really had more than their fill of the big city and the expense of living there. They both had fond memories of Tehachapi, the four seasons and the natural surroundings, and both had vocations that would allow a move, so they began to look. With the help of a local realtor, they finally found the perfect rental in April. The first time Gary saw it he realized...

    Greg Cunningham|Sep 28, 2019

The Universal Serial Bus, or USB. You know, that plug that can only go in one of two ways, but still takes three tries to get it plugged in? Yeah, that one. Where did USB come from, where is it going and why? If you don't know anything about PS/2 connectors, or parallel ports, DIN connectors, SCSI, Firewire, or 9-pin or 25-pin serial ports, you can thank USB. Way, way, back in the early 90s, you could conceivably need some combination of those ports and cables to connect devices to your...

    Sep 28, 2019

Question: I am a 60-year-old female with lupus. I was a bookkeeper for many years and was forced to retire. Primarily, I found that I could not work due to muscle and joint pain, sometimes with swelling, a constant low-grade fever of 99 degrees or more and sensitivity to light, especially office lighting. Can I qualify for benefits? I am too young to collect early retirement benefits and I only get a small retirement from my employer. Answer: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) or lupus is an...

And we deeply appreciate all those who help us care for our four-legged family members – our skilled veterinarians, pet sitters and groomers. Sadly, Ms. Dorrie Walsh, proprietor of "The Groomer," located on South Street, is closing her business after serving the Tehachapi community for the better part of four decades (since 1981). Throughout all those years she has clipped, brushed, washed and, wel...

  • What's Up in Bear Valley Springs?

    Linda Coverdale|Sep 28, 2019

The BVS Association meeting of Sept. 17 had a large attendance, due in part to the introduction of the public liquor license the Board is introducing. Up until now, we have been under a private liquor license. The difficulty with it is that if a non-member who is not accompanied by an Association member is served alcohol in the saloon, the dining room and the Mulligan Room could lose the license, which would affect many of us and severely impact the income of the above amenities. Wine, beer and liquor are some of the main profit making...

  • First Sipping with the Supe almost derailed

    Sep 28, 2019

Joining her were two other School Board Trustees, Joe Wallek and Rick Scott. Undaunted, Larson-Everson drove to Dunkin' Donuts and brought back coffee and donuts offering them to those who came to chat as well as those who came to Kohnen's door only to find it was locked. The next Sipping with the...

  • Winter tires

    provided by Protech Auto Service|Sep 28, 2019

Question: What is the benefit of winter tires? Protech Auto Service Answer: This is a really good question. Most new vehicles in Tehachapi come with all-season tires that work pretty well in the winter conditions drivers may encounter. First, let’s talk about the things that dedicated winter tires do really well, touch on all-seasons and then you should have some information to help you in your tire selection. The first thing about winter is that it’s cold. The rubber compound used in summer and all-season tires gets a bit hard when California...
