  • Living stones

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Aug 31, 2019

If you are of a certain age, you might remember Pet Rocks. They were marketed in the 1970’s, packaged in designer cardboard boxes with a bed of straw inside to cushion googly eyed rocks. Air holes were cut into the sides of the boxes to make the rocks appear alive. This was one of many fads that marched through the 70s, along with bell bottom trousers, great music and love beads. Rocks are all the rage again in 2019, but this time they come with purpose. Stones that fit in the hand, painted w...

  • Pesto or imposter?

    Edna McCallion|Aug 31, 2019

What is pesto? I had been asked this question so many times that I began to look and listen attentively when the word was used. I knew what pesto was, having written a book about it. It is a delicious sauce made by combining basil, garlic, hard cheese, nuts and olive oil. I found out why it was so puzzling when I looked at recipes that had pesto in their name but basil was not an ingredient. For shame! They were imposter sauces taking the name pesto in vain. I was intrigued. I watched the chefs...

  • Tehachapi weather month-to-month, May through August

    Jon Hammond|Aug 31, 2019

Tehachapi weather: it's a thing. Local residents talk about it, enjoy it much of the time, dread it at other times and speculate about how it will affect them. Our weather changes frequently. It can be warm, cool, hot, cold, breezy, windy, still, damp, wet or dry. All in the same week. Tehachapi weather conditions aren't always that fickle, of course, and over time patterns have emerged. Humans tend to have short or at least unreliable memories about weather, saying things like, "It's never...

  • When Caliente Creek started swallowing houses and cars

Jon Hammond, Land of Four Seasons|Aug 31, 2019

In 1983, I was 17 years old and living with my Dad, Mom, sister Joy and brother Brian in an old house in Caliente Canyon. It had been a very wet winter that year, and on March 1, it had been raining really hard for about 3 days. Caliente Creek had risen up and then come back down a few times. Dad left early that morning because he had to be at work in Bakersfield by 6 a.m. My sister Joy had caught the school bus about 6:15. Mom told me, "That water's getting deep, I need you to stay home and...

  • Lazily feeding his face – while getting stung by bees

Jon Hammond, Land of Four Seasons|Aug 31, 2019

One day after I got off work at Lehigh Southwest, I took a drive to think about my Dad, who passed away the year before. I took a dirt road not far from the entrance to Sand Canyon, and I came up on some commercial bee hives. There in broad daylight, at 3:35 in the afternoon, was a black bear lounging against some hives. He had torn two of them open. He was sitting on his rump, leaning against some hives with his arm resting on them, scooping honeycomb into his mouth, swipe after swipe. He...

  • Happy Birthday, California

    Pat Gracey|Aug 31, 2019

When you find that someone who should remember, such as a husband or a child, has forgotten your birthday you say, "Oh, don't worry about it. That's o.k." What you really mean is, "YOU FORGOT MY BIRTHDAY!" California was admitted to the Union as the 31st state on Sept. 9, 1850 but we Californians seldom take note. In fact, we're lucky if it is ever mentioned in the evening news. When I mention it to someone they usually say they were not aware of it at all. Being an old time "Californian" I...

  • A Spitfire at Mojave in 2007 and 2019

    Cathy Hansen|Aug 31, 2019

The aircraft in the photo is a rare Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IXc/e that underwent flight testing here at Mojave Airport over a decade ago before it was shipped to the TAM Air Museum Americana in Brazil. The Supermarine Spitfire is a legend in British aviation history and along with the Hawker Hurricane, successfully defended England in the Battle of Britain (1940-1941) against Germany's Luftwaffe. We were so lucky to actually hear the "Spit" flying over Mojave in July 2007. It was painted in...

  • They make a difference (a call for good news stories)

    Mel White|Aug 31, 2019

In the early 80s I was Recreation Director for Big Sisters of Marin, which meant I planned and implemented a variety of cultural, educational and recreational activities for the big and little sisters and brothers. Some of our activities included the siblings of the kids in the program, some included their whole families. Occasionally I would take a little brother or sister to the day's festivities if their own big sister was unable to attend. So it was that I went to pick up 9-year-old Rachael...
