There were 22 healing sessions completed between four healers: Glen Larsen, Rosemary Powell, James Pickerell and Maria Lomeli. One person even hugged Scott Ware, the appointment scheduler, after receiving a session from holistic healer Dr. James Pickerell. "I really want to hug you for (encouraging me to see him)," she said. There's been an increase in alarming language surrounding the solvency of Social Security, but in reality, its prospects are not nearly as gloomy as you might have heard. Here's the story: Under current law, Social Security is estimated to exhaust its trust funds by 2035, after which benefits could be cut by 20%,...

  • Hagen Oaks Farmers Market

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Feb 4, 2023

Tehachapi's weekly Farmer's Market is always a fun activity in the summers around here, and I love going to see all the produce and craft booths. Our market usually runs from May or June through August or September, in the late afternoon and early evening. Other cities have farmer's markets that run year-round at different times. Bakersfield is one of those cities and actually, they offer a couple of different markets. My friend Leila and I decided to check out the Hagen Oaks Farmer's Market a...

    D. David Hebebrand, Moats & Hebebrand CPAs|Feb 4, 2023

Do I need to file a tax return? The answer depends on your filing status, your age and the type of income you earn. Each person is allowed to earn a certain amount of income before they are required to file a tax return. For 2022 tax returns, individuals are not allowed a personal exemption deduction, but are still entitled to a standard deduction of $12,950 for a single filer. Hence, an individual can have $12,950 of taxable income before being taxed if under age 65. If age 65 or over, an addit...

  • Weekend forecast 100% chance of wine

    Chris Frost, contributing writer|Feb 4, 2023

Recently, I was teaching at Mountain Bible Church on John 2:1-11 where Jesus turns water into wine. Speaking on the subject of alcohol at church can sometimes be tough as one navigates all the various experiences of others and opinions on the subject. I certainly didn't want to blow up someone's sobriety, and yet I still wanted to be faithful to the Scriptures and what they present as a whole on the topic of wine and how that helps us interpret this passage in John's gospel. The Bible speaks...

  • An evening reminiscing

    Diana Palmer, contributing writer|Feb 4, 2023

I remember our first visit to Tehachapi in 1986. In particular, I remember walking down the street in the downtown area, just perusing the few shops here at that time, enjoying the quiet, peaceful atmosphere. We came across people walking as well, and they were so friendly, asking how are you today, just saying “Hi” or a nod as if in recognition of us. We’d look at each other, asking the other, “do you know them?” It was surreal. You would never experience this in the fast paced Los Angeles area where we used to live, work and in my case, gre...

  • His gift to you

    Marty Pay, MBA, CLU, LUTC-F, contributing writer|Feb 4, 2023

I remember being in my late 20s and 30s, living in Thousand Oaks. The highlight of the summer was the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp at Cal Lutheran University. They made their annual pilgrimage to the college getting ready for the upcoming NFL season. I had two good knees at the time and used to run around and up above the school in the hills for my morning workouts. They had a fenced in weight room outside next to the track. Hung on the wired fence was a saying, "Your talents are His gift to...

  • Phone sensors, why Android, Super Bowl

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Feb 4, 2023

Smartphones have replaced desktop and laptop computers for many people. Checking and responding to emails, taking photos, shooting videos, playing games, watching movies, shopping, texting and making phone calls. All from a device that fits in your hand. But, when you're looking at a photo or watching a movie, how does your phone "know" to rotate the screen when you turn the phone sideways? Sensors. Smartphones have many sensors; it takes three in particular for your phone to "know" to rotate...

    Linda Coverdale, contributing writer|Feb 4, 2023

On Thursday, Jan. 12, the CSD Board met for its first meeting under the new leadership. One of the main topics was authorizing GM Malinen to execute a contract to rehabilitate several of our wells that have been inoperable for a few years. Five wells may come back into operation. Will Parks spoke to the topic. They have been inoperable for several years due to lack of funding, but with the upgrade in water bills, the funds may now be available. • Planting the future at the Randall Preserve

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Feb 4, 2023

Under blue Tehachapi skies, a creek chuckled and splashed as it flowed, newly-invigorated by recent rain and snow. A Northern Flicker flashed the bright orange underside of its wings as it swooped from an oak tree, and a Red-tailed Hawk circled slowly overhead, sharp eyes watching the activity below. At the ground level, hundreds of baby plants were being carefully tucked into the soil to start their lives as a future woodland. This was the scene recently as a team of volunteers was busy...
