    LeAnn Williams, District Manager|Jul 23, 2016

On January 20, 2016 the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District (TVRPD) delayed the seasonal opening of Dye Natatorium. We are pleased to announce that the pool was re-opened on Wednesday, July 20, 2016. In 2013, there was a closure due to the roof leak and discovery of black mold. TVRPD replaced the roof in 2013 along with extensive mold remediation and a rebuild of the ceiling and walls of the bathrooms, locker rooms, hallway and lifeguard area. We also replaced the store front doors...

  • Why a Calculator Isn't Helpful

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Jul 23, 2016

She was very surprised when I told her the monthly payment would be $1127 per month. “But my Realtor told me the payment would be only $925!” The Realtor was using a mortgage calculator to estimate the payment based on the price, but the answer you get is only as good as the data you put in. It’s pretty easy to find a loan payment using a web calculator. Most loans are fully amortizing, so if you have 30 equal payments at 4.0% on $193,751, the only correct answer is $925 in monthly princ...

  • Investing: A marathon, Not a Sprint

Ben Graham, Edward Jones Financial Advisor|Jul 23, 2016

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Next week, the 2016 Summer Olympics begin in Rio de Janeiro. One of the most compelling events is the marathon, a 26.2-mile endurance contest with roots dating back to ancient Greece. It may be that we’ve kept our interest in the marathon because it can teach us much about life – and it certainly has lessons for investors. In fact, if you were to compare investing to an Olympic sport, it would be muc...

  • Walmart Appeal, July 26

    Jul 23, 2016

The long-awaited July 14 Walmart appeal hearing has again been rescheduled. The Fifth District Court of Appeal in Fresno has now scheduled the hearing for July 26 when a three judge panel will hear the case. In July of 2015 Kern County Superior Court Judge Kenneth Twisselman ruled that the City of Tehachapi had adequately addressed the environmental concerns of Tehachapi First, a group seeking to halt Walmart construction. Through their attorney, Mark Wolf of San Francisco, the group filed an appeal again challenging the adequacy of the...

  • Meet Your New Neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Jul 23, 2016

She said that the family had primarily moved here from Bakersfield for medical reasons but the weather and the beautiful mountains were also factors. She added that people in Tehachapi have been wonderful. BryAnna said that she was...

  • Tehachapi Water Woes – 1968

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor|Jul 23, 2016

I found an article my mother Marion Deaver written about water in Tehachapi in 1968 and which was discussed by the city council during a special meeting. The city engineer, whose name was only listed as Mr. Simpson, gave a report to the council outlining several programs which could help the “water situation.” Of course, he added that he “could not categorically ensure the council that these programs would work.” (Note: Much has changed since 1968 concerning technology and other factors...

  • Stuff

    Mark Doc Fisher|Jul 23, 2016

I have recently been involved in trying to help some people move. Since they are going to a smaller place they have to get rid of stuff. A lot of stuff. And even when something isn’t an heirloom it can still be a memory; and a memory can be important. I have stuff that I am unlikely to ever need to use again, such as my freshman college physics book. I’m unlikely to ever need that again, since I could look up anything in it on the Internet, and find it faster. However I have memories attached to that battered old book, like how I got rid of...

The Shop With a Cop program is an annual event that joins underprivileged children with local law enforcement officers, providing the children with money to shop for Christmas presents. Pat Gracey|Jul 23, 2016

Doctors Madge and Harold Schlotthauer came to Tehachapi in 1932 and founded the Tehachapi Hospital in 1934. At first they practiced medicine in the Asher Home on the corner of Curry and E Street but after purchasing the Capdeville Hotel in 1934 they turned it into a modern, well equipped medical facility. They were both young and highly skilled physicians and surgeons and treated generations of Tehachapi residents before selling the hospital in 1969. People of the community soon gave up trying...

  • It's Meteor Season

    Dale Hawkins|Jul 23, 2016

August is often called, "Meteor Month," because some of the best meteor showers of the year occur in August. But why should that be? What is it about the earth's orbit that causes a flood of meteors on an annual basis? And how can they be so predictable? Ignoring a lot of small factors, it can reasonably be said that each year the earth returns to the same point in space relative to the sun. As the earth moves around the sun, it does not move through "empty space." We may think of space as...

  • Ransomware

    Greg Cunningham|Jul 23, 2016

Ransomware – what is it and how to protect yourself from it. Ransomware is malicious software that attackers use to encrypt your pictures, documents, and other files for ransom; demanding payment from you to get them back. The ransomware code encrypts files stored on local and network drives using RSA public-key cryptography, with the private key stored on the attacker’s command and control servers. The ransomware then displays a message which offers to decrypt your files after you pay up. Pay...

  • Re-Creation Time

    Dr. Kevin Belsby|Jul 23, 2016

Tis’ the season, vacation time is here! However, I am often asked, “why do I come back from vacation feeling so worn out?” We are Americans and we are after the American dream but often that dream comes with a price. Americans work more days on average and take less time off than any of the other industrialized nations which might also include the “developing” nations as well. According to Expedia.com’s annual Vacation Deprivation Survey, the average American employee is granted 13 paid days o...
