  • As colorful as spring wildflowers: the people of Tehachapi

    Scott Ware, contributing writer|Apr 16, 2022

At the Walmart checkout I was talking to a man who has lived in Tehachapi most of his life. A delightful man, with stories about his gardening that a recent transplant like myself would find helpful. After he'd scanned his groceries and paid, he stayed next to me, still chatting. A young employee came over and asked him to move along to help the flow. He smiled and told her, "That's okay, this is a country store, and this is how we do it in the country." I appreciated the sentiment. Do we...

  • Open your eyes to the dangers of distracted driving

    Apr 16, 2022

Any time drivers take their eyes off the road to look at or use a phone, they are driving blind. For example, looking down at a cell phone to read a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of five seconds - at 55 mph, that is the equivalent of driving the length of a 300-foot football field without looking. As part of April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) are wor...

  • My marathon journey, part two

    Corey Costelloe, contributing writer|Apr 16, 2022

As mentioned previously, it was impossible to recount my entire Los Angeles Marathon experience in one edition of this column, so apologies in advance for this part two. But, accomplishing something that physically and mentally challenging does not come without a lot of support. Naturally, there were those on the home front, my "training camp" staff led by my wife Melissa, keeping things in order as I disappeared for hours at a time to finish the training schedule. She will be vital again when...

  • Standing up and moving

    Mel White, contributing writer|Apr 16, 2022

I was loading groceries into the back of my Escape the other day when a pickup truck pulled into the space beside me. A woman roughly my age stepped out of the cab and just stood there a minute. "I've got to just stand here," she explained, "till my knees settle." Ha! I knew exactly what she meant and told her so. We commiserated a moment or two about how we needed to get our bodies ready to get going after any period of time sitting. I remember those days when I could just get out of the car...

One of the things he really loved to give was his opinion on politics. He was one of a kind for sure. He was...
