  • Setting goals

    Jay Thompson|Jan 9, 2016

Last time we talked about how the number one tool used by millionaires is goal setting and that many small business owners never achieve their true potential due to a lack of focus. There are many types of goals, and it is important to set goals that lead to achieving your overall vision. Make sure that when you complete a goal, it is not the end but it leads you to the next. Don’t try to accomplish too much at once. Set one, two or maybe three goals max. Stay focused and don’t quit. Here are...

  • Cal-Earth

    Mark Fisher, Doc|Jan 9, 2016

Not too long ago we were watching PBS (it happens) and saw a short segment on a group here in California building structures out of EARTH (don't call it "dirt"). They had gracefully curved buildings that would remind a person of a hobbit home. Cozy. But other than being intriguing I didn't learn too much, other than the name of the organization being shown was "Cal-Earth". And that's where things stayed until the concept came up in a recent conversation. That sent me to the Internet and a bit...

I bet you’ve wished it was easier to read the legalese in those End User License Agreement (EULA) we’re always agr...

  • New year, new ways

    Craig R. Stockton, Owner of Treasures eConsignment|Jan 9, 2016

I would like to wish all of you a happy, prosperous, and healthy new year! It has been a whirlwind of a year, many challenges have come, and gone, some successfully met, while others still need work. I am happy to say that my fishing challenges were all happy ones with great days on the water (I managed not to drown myself playing in the river) and many nice fish caught and released to play another day. As many of us do at the end of the year, we try to reflect on the past 12 months and take...

  • The news about healthful diets gets confusing

    Bill Mead, Columnist Emeritus|Jan 9, 2016

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission from Tehachapi Lifestyle Magazine, January 2013 issue. Since I was told I have heart disease I have tried to fine tune my diet so that my arteries don't clog up so fast. I'm beginning to think it's an exercise in futility, not because I can't control my eating habits but because the experts can't seem to agree on what got me into this fix in the first place. It all seemed so simple when somebody discovered cholesterol...

  • How much has changed as things remain the same....

    Dale Hawkins|Jan 9, 2016

By the time this goes to press, most of you will have seen episode VII of Star Wars. A friend offered the view that it contained many of the same plot elements that made the first film, released in 1977, such a success. I don't think George Lucas would take that as negative criticism. He has been very open about the fact that he has been retelling the 'basic hero story' that's been retold for thousands of years. Has it really been nearly forty years since we first saw a lightsaber, a droid, or...

  • There's snow in the mountains and no place to play

Pssst ... You can play if you plan ahead... read on... hapi undertook to develop a brand that distilled the Greater Tehachapi area's appeal. Following months of study and surveys, consultants concluded that what resonated the most with residents and visitors was the mountains. The logo that the consultants developed is a calligraphic suggestion of mountains. In the logo's various iterations by local agencies and groups, the word "up" is used -- as in "Come up and enjoy our community." In the...

  • THS coaches: Unbroken links in leadership

Tehachapi High School head football coach Steve Denman, speaking to the Kiwanis Club of Tehachapi on Dec. 16, 2015, has learned more than a few things about teenagers in 34 years of coaching. Denman spoke at the invitation of Kiwanian George Novinger, who was principal of THS when Denman began his coaching career in 1982. The accumulated wisdom on the dais represented an u...

  • Focused Resolutions

    Victoria Alwin, MSRD|Jan 9, 2016

Every year most of us make an ambitious list of what we want to change in the coming year. The problem is that the list is usually more motivated than we are after the first couple of weeks. Why not use last year’s list and make it more realistic and less painful. For example, if you made the resolution to “exercise more,” make it more focused. Try “exercise for 30 minutes per week,” especially if your idea of exercise is using the TV remote. Does 30 minutes sound like too much or too hard? That averages to less than 5 minutes per day or what y...

  • Drought update

Liz Block, Water Conservation Coordinator, Teh Cummings Co Water Dist|Jan 9, 2016

Governor Brown’s executive order (November 13, 2015) will continue emergency drought restrictions another year if drought conditions persist through January 2016. This one’s a slam dunk. Plan for at least another year of limited outdoor watering and the bucket in the shower. It is a slam dunk for two reasons. Reason one is there is no way we will get enough rainfall in one month to relieve drought conditions. Reason two is that it will take at least a couple of years of above average rainfall to refill depleted groundwater levels. What’s a Cal...

  • Glenn Curtiss – Little known facts of an aviation legend!

    Cathy Hansen|Jan 9, 2016

I must confess that although I was born in Dayton, Ohio, and I certainly respect the Wright Brothers accomplishments, my true admiration and devotion goes to the aviation genius of Glenn Hammond Curtiss, the Father of U.S. Naval Aviation. http://glennhcurtissmuseum.org/ Both the Wright Brothers and Glenn H. Curtiss had bicycle shops before entering into the designing and building of flying machines. Curtiss was known as the 'Fastest man on Earth,' when he installed his own air-cooled,...
