We've watched the parade, lighted the tree, seen the play at the BeeKay, and heard the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra perform. Now, with the days counting down to Christmas Day, it's our turn to sing! An ensemble of The Tehachapi POPS Orchestra (TPOPS) members and friends invite the community to join them for an old-fashioned Holiday Family Singalong on Thursday, Dec 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Adult Daycare Health Center (ADHC). James Peck will conduct the musicians, and TPOPS President Maria Weir...
It is safe to say that we are blessed with several givers in this community – specifically in the world of sports. I look at pictures of our local teams and spot many coaches and volunteers that came up through the ranks locally, and are giving back to the sport and the community they love. It is not a foreign concept in athletics. Coaches are usually comprised of former athletes themselves, some played at a high level, others not so much, but their love for the game and the appreciation of the...
The holiday season, synonymous with warmth and joy, often sees the emergence of a concerning trend – the impulse to gift pets. While the notion of surprising a loved one with a furry friend might seem heartwarming, the reality is far more complex. Pets are not mere presents; they are long-term commitments that demand dedication, responsibility and unwavering care. This is one of the reasons Have a Heart Humane Society will not approve an adoption, if the owner to the rescue being adopted is n...

TVAA was formed soon after World War II. In 1945, Tehachapi's soldiers were returning home. Many had developed new skills and talents while serving their country. The women who had waited at home had also developed skills and artistic talents – after all, this was a time of new beginnings, creativity and make do with what you have. It was a time of hope and wanting to bring color and beauty to their surroundings. A casual group of artists and crafters was formed – the Tehachapi Valley Arts Ass...
Let's talk for a minute about taking care of your fresh flowers. You've been sent a gorgeous design from your local florist and you want it to last as long as possible, so now what? The first and most important thing flowers need is water, and plenty of it. Freshly cut stems can soak up lots of water, in the first few days especially. To ensure your flowers have all the water they can drink, check the water level at least one or even twice daily and keep it as full as the container will allow....

With just a few hours remaining on Have A Heart's annual Giving Tuesday fundraiser on Nov. 28, Barabara Ferrante, owner of Jake's Steakhouse, dropped off an extraordinarily generous donation of pet food and a $1,000 check at the organization's new storefront at 787 W. Tehachapi Blvd, Suite B. Barabara purchased the $700-plus haul of pet food from Canine Creek that afternoon, where owner Kellie Dudevoir was more than happy to give Barabara a 20% discount on the charitable purchase. Have A Heart...
We all have memories from this time of year, of loved ones who we still see and some who have gone before us. For many of us, the memories are cold ones of snowy walks and bundling up in multiple layers of clothing. For some of us the memories are of warmer climates with t-shirts and shorts or at least clothes that don't involve putting on thermal jackets and underwear. Many of us had large family gatherings around the table that involved aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers and sisters, but for...
The world changes. The person in the mirror certainly changes. Our tastes change, as do our life circumstances and how we deal with them. But Christmas and the Holiday Season stay very consistent, and we're not willing to let anything change how they fill up our hearts. In a world where there seems to be fewer opportunities to feel this good on a soul level, the festive end of our year provides many chances to feel more love in our heart and a profound connection to something greater than our...

From time to time, I receive interesting stories from friends and readers that I like to share with you in this space. Today is one of those days; please enjoy this special story by (that most prolific) Author Unknown: First lecture; the professor enters the lecture hall and looks around. "You there in the 8th row. Can you tell me your name?" he asks a student. "My name is Sandra" says a voice. The professor says to her, "Please leave my lecture hall. I don't want to see you in my lecture." Ever...
My wife died recently and I need to transfer the property into my name. How do I do that if my name is not on the deed? I thought since I am the surviving spouse I can just transfer the property into my name. Remember, this information is not legal advice. Please consult an attorney if you need direction on what procedure to use in your case. Fortunately there is a simple solution. But it does require a court order. According to "How To Probate and Estate in California" by NOLO, any property...
Barbara Jean Holland (née Bernard), the life of the party, entered the world on March 21, 1945, in Los Angeles, and bid us farewell on Nov. 2 at the age of 78, in Bakersfield. Jean is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jack Ray of Tehachapi, her daughter Christine Ionna of Bakersfield and her son Michael James of Seattle, Washington. Jean knew how to turn any gathering into a joyous...

Like many people who grew up in the Christian church, I viewed the pentagram with suspicion. What I thought I knew about the five-pointed star made it something I wanted to avoid. As this symbol keeps showing up on tapestries, jewelry, books and other items that I have in my store, the Healthy Hippie Trading Co., I decided to do some research on this pointy star and share what I learned with others who might be misinformed like I was. The pentagram is an ancient symbol used by many cultures and...
Radio is back! Not the screaming meemies of commercial broadcasting, but the Theatre of Imagination that millions of Americans experienced as they gathered around radios every night to hear Charlie McCarthy, Gang Busters and Orson Welles' famous "War of the Worlds." Tehachapi actors are bringing back vintage entertainment with in person performances of original radio dramas. Recently, the T-Pops orchestra presented "A Bull in Chinatown," a Halloween special by local writer Deborah Hand-Cutler....
