  • When cash is not king

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Jun 10, 2017

Really, he was trying to help. Knowing that he needed a clean paper trail for the money they’d use to buy a house, he opened a new account. Since the bank puts holds on checks for the first month, he cashed his paychecks at the old bank to put cash in the new account. Then he met me and the fun began. These days when you’re buying a house, we get super nosy about where your down payment is coming from. When your bank statement shows deposits that aren’t payroll, we want to know where those...

  • Another balanced budget for Tehachapi

    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|Jun 10, 2017

It’s been said that a government’s budget is its most clear policy document. For the City of Tehachapi, the budget adopted by the City Council on June 5, 2017 should demonstrate that the City’s policy priority continues to be fiduciary responsibility of taxpayer funds. With projected General Fund revenues of $6.58 million and General Fund expenditures expected to total $6.48 million, the City is continuing its tradition of positively balanced budgets, just as it did throughout the reces...

    Mel White|Jun 10, 2017

In honor of Father’s Day I’d like to honor my father, who passed away in 2000, by telling you a little bit about him and how he lived his life. My dad, Thomas C. White, MD, was born and raised in Southern Iowa. The oldest of seven kids, he was a dirt poor farm boy during the Great Depression, proud of his roots but destined to forge his own path in life. His path would allow him to pursue his many interests and make use of his many talents, taking him on several new adventures and allowing him...

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission. Last week for no particular reason I thought about my Lost Island summer, reaching back nearly 50 years and a couple of thousand miles. Old men so that a lot, I’m finding out. Lost Island Lake is in northern Iowa. It isn’t very big, perhaps two square miles, but it looms large in my memory because it is where Dad and I reached a turning point in the way we felt about each other. Under straw hats, we discovered that we w...

    Pat Gracey|Jun 10, 2017

On June 13, of this year, 2017, St. Malachy Church will be celebrating one hundred thirty years as a parish. Long years ago on that date in 1887, a Bishop from the Monterey-Los Angeles Diocese trekked to the small mountain community to designate the small church as a parish. The little white frame building had been constructed by members of the community, of all denominations, who were anxious to help by "pounding a few nails" with the Catholics; their neighbors and friends. Article by, Kathleen Romig Find it online at www.cbpp.org/blog/presidents-budget-would-hurt-people-with-disabilities President Trump’s 2018 budget would make it harder for millions of people with disabilities to afford the basics — food on the table, a roof over their heads, and access to health care. It cuts $72 billion over ten years from disability programs, including Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). And it would gut Medicaid, food assistance...

  • The Pacific Crest Trail and Tehachapi

Christopher Rush, local Trail Angel and PCT Section Hiker|Jun 10, 2017

As a PCT hiker myself, I know how nice it is to come into one of the few towns along the trail to eat something other than dehydrated food and perhaps sleep on a mattress for a change. As Tehachapi residents, my wife and I have helped out many PCT hikers over the years providing rides to and from the two local trailheads and Tehachapi. The two things that strike me most over the past few years is how the PCT has become more and more an international attraction and how much of an economic benefit the trail has become to trial towns like Tehachap...
