  • Joan Johnson: a Mother's Day remembrance of a wonderful lady

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Apr 30, 2022

Since this is The Loop's Mother's Day issue, I decided that I would honor an amazing lady who was a devoted mother and raised her own two children here in Tehachapi, but she also provided motherly support and was a role model to countless other local kids. Her name was Joan Johnson. Joan (pronounced jo-anne) was married for 67 years to Tehachapi boy Dick Johnson, whose father Walter published the Tehachapi News for many years. Joan helped at the family business for decades, since Walter later...

    Diana Frieling, contributing writer|Apr 30, 2022

If you have ever visited the ranch you have probably met my "girl pack." They are an integral part of the ranch. Each of these girls is a rescue. Truly was dropped off at the Berkeley Animal Shelter by a group of homeless people. She was sick and full of fox tails so bad she needed two surgeries. Momma and Sophie are typical desert dumps. Momma was dropped off along with her puppies in Mojave where she raised and protected them until I found her. There were four puppies but I was only able to ca...

  • Mothers are people too

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Apr 30, 2022

May is the month we honor mothers, celebrating being a mother, or honoring the mother that birthed us. This mother may have been loving and strong, nurturing and wise. Or maybe not. Because mothers are people living their own lives as well as ours. Mothers are people who love and people who hurt and bleed. Maybe they hold secrets they take to their graves, or maybe they break down and tell their story. This is one such story… “A Letter from Nana Rose” by Kristin Harper starts at a beach cotta...

  • Retiring early? Know your health care choices

Francisco Garcia, Edward Jones Financial Advisor|Apr 30, 2022

Life doesn't always go as planned. For example, you might think you'll retire at 65 or later, when you'll be eligible for Medicare. But if you retire before then, how will you pay for your health care? Without insurance, you risk incurring thousands of dollars of expenses if you are injured or become seriously ill. And if you must pay for these costs out of pocket, you might have to dip into your IRA, 401(k) or other retirement accounts earlier than you had planned – which could result in a l...

Due to unprecedented circumstances, she found herself not in Southeast Asia, but in Afghanistan. In part, she was able to succeed in this position because of her tenacity. Some good examples of this trait are...

The last couple of years have been rough around all the holidays, as we haven't been able to get together in large groups due to the pandemic. Thankfully things are a little different/better this year and more people will be able to celebrate things like the upcoming Mother's Day in person. And of course, for a variety of reasons, some won't be able to see mom this year either, as is always true (work schedules, finances, etc.). But even if you can't be together personally, you can always...
