  • Another Year at Windswept Ranch

    Mar 14, 2015

I have been getting a lot of calls to see when the ranch will open, and there are days I wonder if it will happen. It's not that I don't love sharing, it's just that there is a lot of work involved and the people who loyally donate their time to help out are really being stretched to the max. When you open a place to the public, few people recognize the effort that goes into it. I am not just talking about cleaning pens – that happens on a daily basis and is handled by staffers – I am tal...

  • Meet your new neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Mar 14, 2015

It was the clean air and country setting that lured Curtis and Sharon Cummings to Tehachapi. Two of their children have been plagued by allergies, so they were really looking forward to the healthful change in beautiful surroundings. Curtis has been a directional driller for Geo-Guidance Drilling Services in Bakersfield for seven years. Of course, I had to ask what a directional driller does; Curtis told me that it was his job to steer the drill to the oil. He has a fifth wheel trailer, which he...

  • Pre-qualify before you list

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Mar 14, 2015

“Don’t touch anything! We shouldn’t be looking at a $300,000 house!” That’s what Mrs. Buyer said to Mr. Buyer when they went looking at new homes. They just wanted to get a feel for new neighborhoods and had not spoken with a mortgage professional yet. They also didn’t know if they could buy the next house before they sell their current home. After spending a few weeks agonizing about whether or not they could move closer to their jobs, we connected by phone. We talked about what they wanted...

  • Dear Fed-Up-With- Things-Being-Chewed-Up

    Liz R. Kover, Animal-Assisted Activities Director|Mar 14, 2015

Not many things are more frustrating than finding your favorite pair of shoes or expensive headphones shredded to a pulp. But it's important to face the issue calmly and objectively, which you can do by remembering a couple of things. If your dog is still a puppy – especially one in between the ages of four and six months – this is totally normal, and it will pass. If your dog is older and still chewing out of control, chances are the behavior wasn't dealt with properly early on and will be mor...

  • Desert wildflower season

    Mayor Susan Wiggins, Mayor|Mar 14, 2015

"The wildflowers are blooming!" When my mother, Marion Deaver, exclaimed this on a weekend it meant we were headed for the desert to check out the wildflowers. My mom knew each of her favorite spots and which wildflowers would be blooming there in a year with "appropriate" rainfall. That meant that there would have to be fall rains to help the seeds germinate, and spring rains to bring them up and to bloom in all their glory. We would travel to "Nine Mile Hill", east of Mojave, to look for...

'It's a beautiful business.' – Brassard Isabelle Brassard, general manager of the Rio Tinto Boron operations, told the March 5, 2015 meeting of the East Kern Economic Alliance at the Borax Visitor Center that business is good. "Twenty-fourteen was a great year for us," said Brassard, a native of Montreal. "We are doing the right things to keep this business in good shape." • The building of an environmentally friendly lifestyle - part 1

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Mar 14, 2015

I met Ann Tavormina when she spoke at the Triassic Legacy Vineyard "Winter Wednesday" presentation in February. The title of her talk was "Designing and Building a Passive Solar, Fossil-Fuel Free, Grid-Neutral Home". It was soon obvious that it was far more than designing a house, it was designing a sustainable lifestyle. When I talked to her after her presentation about possibly writing about her project, she very graciously invited me to visit her home and see how the project had grown since...

  • Silver bullet

    Victoria Alwin, MSRD|Mar 14, 2015

As I get older, I agree more with Bette Davis’ statement that aging is not for sissies. Aging has taught me that my muscles and joints have more opinions, sometimes rather painful ones, than I ever thought possible, especially first thing in the morning. Then there is the matter of memory. I know that I once had a memory, but I can’t always remember when. Finally there is Alzheimer’s and other dementias that seem to be more common as time passes. Kind of depressing, isn’t it? Studies done in the past few years have shown that there is a way t...

Learn to photograph desert wildflowers in the Mojave with Eastern Sierras landscape photographer and local guide, Cheryl McDonald, the weekend of April 10-12, 2015. The winter weather for 2015 in the Mojave Desert is creating a lot of excitement for wildflower enthusiasts. Already the high desert is green and flowers are beginning to bloom.
