  • What's Up in Bear Valley Springs?

    Linda Coverdale, contributing writer|Aug 5, 2023

On Thursday, July 27, the CSD Board met to pass the annual budget. The board praised the budget for the most part. One sticking point was that it allowed a 2.8% COLA for staff. Members of the board were concerned that it was stated without first negotiations. After some back and forth, the budget was finally passed 5-0, with the COLA taken out temporarily until negotiations could be completed. At that same meeting, our longtime Secretary of the Board Kristy McEwen resigned. She has been with the CSD almost 10 years. Her official titles and...

There is a little compensation for doing this locally. I also need different people to assist with the AARP Tax Aide program. I need greeters and preparers. The greeters do not need computer skills whereas the preparers do. We provide the Chromebook for tax preparation, so you do need a little computer knowledge. Training for tax service begins in January as we begin preparing taxes...

  • More pun stuff

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Aug 5, 2023

Every time I offer up a column of fun puns I get a lot of positive feedback... and a lot more puns coming my way. Looks like there are a lot of pun lovers out there (including me), so here, then, are some more punny offerings from my collection for your enjoyment: There was a big saddle sale at the boat store. It was quite an oar deal. England has no kidney bank... but it does have a Liverpool. I tripped and hit my head on a snare drum, and now I think I have a percussion. As a Superhero, I...

  • When is enough, enough?

    Marty Pay, MBA, CLU, LUTC-F, contributing writer|Aug 5, 2023

The Federal Reserve decided to raise rates again by .25%, which is nudging rates to the highest level in over 20 years. With this increase federal funds will increase to 5.25-5.5%. Unfortunately, the Feds did not give anyone the impression that the spicket would be turned off. Money managers are now starting to take into consideration the possibility of one more rate hike later this year. But at what point will increases become counterproductive. Inflation is starting to come down and perhaps...

If you own a business, you've always got a lot on your mind. But no matter how busy you are today, you need to think about tomorrow. Specifically, you'll want to create an exit strategy for the day you want to move on from your business to a new phase in your life. • Kern County teens successfully graduate from 10-day Devil Pups Camp

Devil Pups Youth Program for America|Aug 5, 2023

Many adults may think that America's teens will not be prepared to lead this nation in the future because America's teens have all gone soft. Think again. A summer camp that prepares young men and women, ages 14 to 17 for what life will bring them may seem like a valuable venue. However, it takes on a new meaning when it is instilled by sweat and by active-duty Marine Corps instructors yelling and hurrying these teens throughout their day and guiding them through their training. That is exactly...

At the time, Lindbergh was a consultan...

  • The auto air conditioning system: know the parts

    DPT Automotive|Aug 5, 2023

You might think of your auto air conditioning system like the engine cooling system. Just as the engine cooling system moves heat from the engine to the air, the air conditioning system moves heat from the cabin to the outside. This makes for more comfortable driving and defogs your windshield faster, but how does it all work? Auto air conditioning components Like the engine cooling system, the auto air conditioning system uses a pump to circulate coolant. Air conditioning refrigerant's special...
