August is a busy month in Tehachapi. The kids go back to school Aug. 9, Cheers to Charity is Aug. 12 and the Mountain Festival is Aug. 18-20. Things are just as busy at the Healthy Hippie Trading Co., located in Old Town on Brian Way, with kitten adoption on both Aug. 3 and Aug. 25, and another sound bath healing session on Aug. 27 with tarot readings by Jallen.

The kitten adoption event is put on by Fixin' Feral Felines (FFF), a local group that started in April 2022. Since its inception, the organization has, under the auspices STOP (Save Tehachapi's Orphaned Pets), taken in over 200 kittens and cats, and has trapped, neutered and released close to 350 cats and kittens. Feral cats have always been part of the landscape however, without intervention, their numbers increase to the point where they are a detriment to the community, plus diseases begin to spread among the felines. FFF founder, Gina Christopher, is proud of the work the organization has done but stresses that the heart of everything are the people who foster the kittens and cats until permanent homes can be secured for them.

"Without people willing to foster these abandoned and sometimes feral kittens, it would be very difficult to do the work we do," she said.

Gina's dream for the community would be a permanent cat adoption center.

"Until that happens," she says, "we will continue to rely upon the people who are willing to step up and foster these animals."

FFF will provide support to the foster families in the form of cat litter and cat food, if needed, plus they bear the cost of all immunizations and spay/neuter expenses. If you would like to help out, contact FFF by emailing them at FixinFeralFelines@gmail.com. Hippie owner, Sarah Rose, is honored to help out the organization.

"As a cat lover, I can't think of a better way to be of service to the felines of our community. It's a wonderful feeling to watch a kitten or cat get adopted," Sarah said.

The other event that Sarah is excited to host is a sound bath healing session by Shanan.

"This will be our third sound bath and I expect it to be sold out just as the other two were. It is an amazing experience for only $20 that I think everyone should partake in," she said.

The session begins at 3 p.m. sharp and lasts about an hour. An added bonus for the afternoon is Jallen who will be doing tarot readings. "Jallen books up fast so I encourage those who are interested to text him at (661) 330-2380." Along with Jallen, artisan Shelley Black will be on hand to educate people on the benefits of her EMF jewelry. Attendees can book a spot for the sound bath in person or by calling the store at (661) 822-9797.

The Healthy Hippie Trading Co. is located at 20418 Brian Way and are open 6 days a week (closed Mondays.)
