Jennifer Butler, coordinator of Instructional Support and Improvement for Tehachapi Unified School District, spoke to the Tehachapi Rotary Club on Jan. 18 about the Tehachapi Unified School District's initiative called Capturing Kids Hearts.

The program is designed to give multi-tiered support to students, helping them deal with mental, social and emotional issues by focusing on developing self awareness, positive behavior and social interaction. Children are taught how to correct their own behavior by learning to ask themselves questions such as: 1. What are you doing? 2. What should you be doing? 3. Are you doing it? 4. What are you going to do about it? 5. What's going to happen next time?

The program, now being used throughout TUSD and other school districts, was developed by the Flippen Group in 2016.

Jennifer Butler has been a teacher with TUSD for many years and was chosen Certificated Teacher of the Year for TUSD in 2017.

The Rotary Club of Tehachapi is a volunteer service organization with the motto, "Service Above Self." The Club meets at Kelcy's on Thursdays at noon. For more information about Rotary Club, you can visit their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/RotaryClubofTehachapi/.
