Riverwind is coming to town

Kiwanis members were entertained with a duet performed by CJ and Liz, the middle-age couple in the play.

Kiwanis members were treated to a preview of the upcoming musical, Riverwind, when Director Karl Schuck introduced the cast and explained his reasons for selecting this play.

He had seen Riverwind in 1965 and dreamed of one day being its director. When there was an opening for Tehachapi Community Theater to stage a musical, Schuck volunteered to direct the play that had captivated him many years ago. He described the play as sweet and charming, the perfect show for Tehachapi.

The story takes place in the late 1950s and is about three couples who learn from each other how to improve their relationships. The characters talk and sing to one another about life and love.

Kiwanis members were entertained with a duet performed by CJ and Liz, the middle-age couple in the play. Ricky Peregrina, one of the young couple, played the guitar and sang about unrequited love.

The cast of seven began practicing in late February for the opening on May 13. Rehearsals are held three nights a week as the opening comes nearer. Crystal Wheeler, assistant director, pointed out that the play

involves many other people including those who build sets and those who help with the sound and lighting.

A band of six performs the background and accompaniment music, but because of the size of the theater it is impossible to have them appear live. They recorded the music with the help of Peter and Deborah Hand-Cutler, and that provides consistency for the eight performances of the show.

Kiwanis enjoyed the preview and looks forward to attending Riverwind at the BeeKay Theater May 13, 14, 20, 21, 22, and June 3, 4, and 5.
