American Legion Auxiliary announces May as Poppy Month

Emerson Fisher presents first poppy of the year to Mayor Susan Wiggins on behalf of The American Legion Auxillary Unit 221.

A long standing tradition of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 221 is to have the chosen Girl State Delegate give the first poppy of the year to a distinguished member of the community. This year is no exception. At a recent Tehachapi City Council meeting Tehachapi High School Junior Emerson Fisher gave the first poppy to City Mayor, Susan Wiggins.

This is the first step in announcing May as Poppy Month. American Legion Auxiliary members and Post Legion members will be seen around town passing out the memorial poppy beginning May 8th. While members do not sell the poppies,

donations are appreciated. Each poppy offered has been hand made by California veterans in various VA facilities, and Cal Vet homes. Each Veteran that makes these poppies, receives .10 cents per poppy. This is extra spending money and, in some cases, the only source of income for these veterans. All monies raised are earmarked solely for support of our local veterans, and their families.

Emerson Fisher will be attendingthe June 27 thru July 2, 2016 Girls State session held at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California. Girls State is a leadership program of the American Legion Auxiliary designed to increase awareness and knowledge of governmental processes while learning about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Emerson is the daughter of Jeffrey & Mandy Fisher.
