Local school children benefit from grants

Have-a-Heart Humane Society is pleased to report that our two grants totaling $12,000.00 for humane education are well on their way to being spent on Tehachapi’s school children. So far we have scheduled CALM (California Living Museum, Bakersfield) to do presentations in four schools: Carden Charter School, Cummings Valley Elementary School, Hope Academy Charter School and Valley Oaks Charter School. CALM will bring up to five animals to each school and talk to the children about the species and their habitats.Have-a-Heart will be on hand to stress being respectful of animals as well as being kind. After the presentation, each child will be asked to report on what they learned and the best written reports will be highlighted on the Have-a-Heart Facebook page, our new website (in the making) and in other media. Prizes will also be given to the students with the best written reports.

In addition, Have-a-Heart has ordered 30 subscriptions of KIND NEWS, an 8 page magazine published by The Humane Society of the United States in three grade levels and delivered six times a year. These magazines will be made available to every child in the above mentioned schools.

The CALM presentations and the KIND NEWS subscriptions are available to all Tehachapi schools on a first come first serve basis, until the funds run out. Other schools and teachers have been contacted and we are waiting to hear from them. If you are a teacher in Tehachapi and would like to take advantage of our humane education grant funds, please email: haveaheart@bak.rr.com

Again, we would like to thank the Petfinder Foundation, Build a Bear Workshop Foundation and our own Union Bank for their generous donations.
