Tehachapi Lions Club celebrates vision health during October

Lion members kicked off their celebration by participating in a “Most Unique Glasses” contest at their Oct.1 meeting. Dr. Caroline Robison, local Tehachapi optometrist, spoke to the Lions about a fundraiser idea during the Oct. 3rd Tehachapi Valley Health Fair to help community members in need receive free eye exams through the Lions Club.

The Lions also heard from Randy Stein of the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation of Southern California. The Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation’s mission is to restore the gifts of sight and hearing to residents of Southern California who cannot afford the help they need. Loss of sight or hearing can have devastating consequences. People lose jobs. They lose their mobility. Those who lose their hearing tend to isolate themselves.

LSH has funded eye surgery or provided hearing aids to approximately 100 people this year. With the help of LSH, their clients have been able to resume their jobs and their social lives and to live independently. Not only was the Lions Club EyeMobile offering free glaucoma and vision screenings at the Oct.3rd Tehachapi Valley Health Fair, but the Tehachapi Lions will also be observing White Cane Days on Oct. 23-24th at Albertson’s and Kmart to help raise funds for eye exams and glasses for those in need in our community.

If you are interested in community service and want to know more about your local Lions Club, feel free to visit us on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at the Tehachapi SENIOR CENTER at 6:30 p.m.
