Can't give 'em away!

Water Matters

The FREE low flow toilets and FREE installation program has been available to City of Tehachapi residents and businesses with older buildings since September, 2014. For those who participated – you rock! However, the response has been less than overwhelming, and I've been mystified. Here are some reasons people might not participate.

1. Fear of having a stranger come into the house.

Meet Jason, our installer (photo). He has worked for Southwest Environmental (SWE) for 15 years, and can install a toilet in 20 minutes! SWE does criminal background checks and drug testing for all their plumbers, and just rechecked and retested everyone two months ago. The Better Business Bureau gave SWE a grade of A+, with zero complaints filed against them. We regularly receive compliments about Jason, saying he is on time, courteous, quick, and clean.

2. The sewer line will get clogged, there won't be enough water to wash the waste down the line.

This is a legitimate concern, but after years of installing low flow toilets all over the country, the actual occurrence of low flow toilets causing sewer clogs is very low. To be honest, we installed toilets at one small apartment building that did get clogged sewer lines, and the plumber found out they had very old cast iron sewer lines. So they flush twice for solids. At your house, you have water from the showers, sinks, dish washer and washing machine in addition to the toilet washing everything down the line.

3. Free is just too good to be true. There must be a catch.

Yes, the program is real and absolutely free. No, there are no strings attached.

4. Only white toilets are offered, and you want colored toilets.

I get this one, I do. I love color and harmonious color combinations! Please take advantage of our Rebate Program that will pay $125 toward your low flow colored toilet(s), but do it soon because we need to save water now!

5. Concern that the "footprint" of the toilet will be too small and leave dirty discolored tile exposed, or won't be able to work with the carpet.

The toilets in our program have large footprints that will work in almost every situation. But if you would like, we will come to your house and measure just to be sure.

6. Its a waste to replace a toilet that works just fine.

Consider that it is a waste to use three to six times as much water as is needed to flush. Your new toilet should provide as many years of service as your "old reliable."

I hope I've relieved your concerns because the deadline for applications is: JUNE 30, 2015
