The Forde Files Spotlight 1

August 16, 2014

Thank you to a kind passing stranger who took the photo.

Riding the rails – Above, the Tehachapi group at 7th Street/Metro Center Metro station in Los Angeles, left front, leaning down, Flasirfida Smith; from left, Bruce Perry, Dean Smith, Teresa Perry, Charles White, Marlan Woodside, Jim Wilson, Fred Motter (white hat), Laurie Rude-Betts, Shirley Motter (blue shirt), Hal Morgan (behind Shirley), Carol Newell, Cheryl Wilson, Patricia Hunter, Shirley Graves, Tina Cunningham. Obscured behind Graves is Teresa Sanchez.

Under the guiding hand of trip organizer Marlan Woodside – a member of the Tehachapi Loop Railroad Club and Friends of the Tehachapi Depot who is a dedicated promoter of rail travel – a group of Tehachapi residents on a recent Saturday boarded a Green Line Metrolink double-deck view car in Lancaster to spend the day poking around downtown LA, eating at a classic eatery near an old railroad yard and attending a film, sponsored by the L.A. Conservancy, at the grand Orpheum Theater on Broadway.

The LA skyline and City Hall as seen from the train as it approaches the Metrolink station, an extension of the historic Union Station. The ride to LA is just shy of two hours.

The growing Metrolink system is people-friendly, new, safe and clean. The stations flow with throngs of people hurrying to their destinations. Designers have included works of public art and, in the portal connecting the hub to Union Station, a soaring fan-shaped glass ceiling.

The weekend day fare is $10

for unlimited all-day travel. See http://www.metrolinktrains.com for information and special deals (kids ride free in August on Angels Express...).
