City to expand BeeKay backstage area

City Council Update

At their May 6 meeting, the Tehachapi City Council approved a project proposed by the city to add a 15 foot x 20 foot expansion space behind the BeeKay Theatre.

The new area will be exterior walls only with other improvements to be decided and financed by the Tehachapi Community Theater organization. It is hoped that this project will solve some of the space problems that have plagued the theater since its restoration in 2006.

The city understands that TCT has been able to put money aside to assist with the expansion by completing the interior to their specifications. The wood-frame structure would provide the shell, including the roof and stucco finish. The city proposes to use $100,000 from the General Fund for the design and construction of the project. As it was not a budgeted item, the City Council approved the allocation from Measure S funds to complete the addition.

The Tehachapi City Council meets on the first and third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. They are currently meeting at the Police Department Community Room, 220 W. C St.
