California Highway Patrol (CHP) focused on pedestrian safety

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nearly three out of four pedestrian deaths occur in urban environments (73 percent), at non-intersections (70 percent), during the nighttime (70 percent), and many involve alcohol.

“Motorists and pedestrians equally share the obligation to ensure the safety of one another,” said Mojave Area Commander Lieutenant Irigoyen. “Be mindful and cautious of pedestrians and vehicle traffic while traveling on Kern County roadways.”

To help reduce the number of pedestrian collisions occurring in the Eastern region of Kern County, the Mojave Area CHP will be deploying Special Enforcement Units (SEU) focusing on pedestrian violations and vehicle violations involving pedestrians.

“Pedestrian safety is a high priority in our community,” added Lieutenant Irigoyen. “With an increased and aggressive enforcement effort we can reduce pedestrian involved collisions and make our roadways safer for everyone.”
