Spring is the season for growth

Over the last four decades, Rick Gillies established a local tradition with Mountain Gardens Nursery.

Hi, I am Rick Gillies and I have been in business in Tehachapi for over 44 years at Mountain Gardens Nursery! We sell trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, soil, fish (both tropical and coldwater), garden worms, mealworms, superworms, waxworms, crickets, rats, mice, garden art, fertilizer and items to control pests in plants. In March, April and May, we also sell baby chicks, ladybugs, praying mantis, and this year, red worms arrived on March 20.

It's been a long winter and now it's time to plant trees, shrubs, etc. Some veggies are already here, like tomatoes, squash, etc. The ground is nice right now with all the moisture we have had, so at least get the garden ready to plant. We have OSBC, Gromulch, Harvest Supreme, potting soil and acid mix to make the soil rich. It's always time to plant trees!

Plant seeds indoors now so they are ready to plant outside in April or May. I have what you need to get started, like soil planters, mini greenhouses and more.

Late frost is imminent in Tehachapi, through late May in some years! I have seen a late snow on Memorial Day weekend several times since I have been here, so don't bring plants up from a warm climate or they won't be happy. We usually plant the garden around Mother's Day. Have a prosperous growing season!
