It was June 30, 2007 when PJ Simunovich opened Sim Sanitation in Tehachapi. His family-owned business specializes in septic systems, and rentals of portable toilets and fencing. But, he had no idea how far the business would go.

Now, he and his team travel all across Kern and Los Angeles counties for clients. From jobs as large as working with Edwards Air Force Base and the Tehachapi and Lancaster prisons, to providing needed facilities for weddings and little league events, there is never a dull day at the office.

"PJ never says no," said Dana Golding, a longtime employee at Sim Sanitation.

He looks forward to working with the organizations, such as the Tehachapi Historical Society, Tehachapi Little League, Bear Valley Springs, the local Boy Scouts and even the Tehachapi Amateur Radio Association on their events, providing sanitation and fencing needs. Sim Sanitation even provided services for the Air Show at Edwards Air Force Base.

According to Dana, the best part of each day at Sim Sanitation is working with the people. Customers are often getting ready to install a septic tank or are in a septic emergency and need help.

"We try to get out there the same day or as soon as possible. If we can't get someone out right away, we refer them to other local businesses," Dana said.

When it comes to regular septic maintenance, Dana has advice to share.

"Rain and harsh winters can damage septic systems, that's why it's important to keep up regular maintenance with our Tehachapi seasons. Families of three to five people, where lots of water is used, need to have an inspection every two to three years. Couples should look to inspect every five years or so," Dana said.

Not only is PJ and his team passionate about their customers, they are serious about working with local businesses, nonprofits and community groups. From providing fencing for events, to supplying porta potties for sports teams, to making sure new home owners have completed the appropriate soil test before installing a new septic system, Sim Sanitation is committed to the customer and the community. In 2023, the company donated $10,000 to the Make a Wish Foundation. PJ was very excited about the opportunity to make dreams come true. At Christmas time, the office had a Toys for Tots bin and it was heartwarming to see the community come out and fill it up. Most recently, Sim Sanitation donated hundreds of kites for the Tehachapi Wind Festival, taking place April 20 at Meadowbrook Park, so kids from the community could have a free kite to fly.

Sim Sanitation will be keeping their regular outreach through their Instagram (@simsanitation) and Facebook platforms, but will also start connecting with residents via the Nextdoor app. Their website, simsanitation.com, is also a great way to learn about their wide-variety of services, including holding tank rentals, RV pumping and even the authorized sale and installation of FUJI Clean USA Alternative Wastewater Treatment Systems. No matter the work, PJ and the Sim Sanitation team are ready to help.

Sim Sanitation is located at 20021 West Valley Blvd., Suite A, Tehachapi. They are a proud member of the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce and Silver Sponsor for the Tehachapi Wind Festival.

Clare Scotti is the Executive Director of Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce.
