How Stray Leaves Vineyard began

March 30, 2024

Stray Leaves Vineyard and Tasting Room has accomplished a great deal since it first began.

Vineyard owner, Clifford Meridth, had always enjoyed taking care of his plants, tending to the garden each year with fruit trees and vegetables. His land of 25 acres, that he had acquired over the years for his horses, gave him an opportunity to put his gardening skills and love of wine to use. Back in 2009, Clifford began to plant the first vines of Riesling, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in his vineyard. He finished planting all his vines in 2011, with the addition of Zinfandel, Primitivo and more Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. His vineyard expands over five acres on his property with room to expand when the time is right.

Clifford completed his first harvest in 2012, then spent the next four years reaping the rewards with friends. It was during that time that the need for a tasting room became apparent. His vineyard was producing amazing wines and it was time to share them with more people. He had originally made plans for a tasting room on his property, but once again saw an opportunity to stand out among other vineyards when the old bank building downtown went up for sale in 2016. The doors finally opened to the public in January of 2023.

In the end, it was the right decision to open the tasting room in Downtown Tehachapi, allowing easier access for the public, and giving Clifford more room to take care of his horses, cats, dogs and vines on his property.

Since opening, the tasting room has upgraded and grown, giving his customers the best service possible. He still enjoys being at his vineyard and looks forward to the many more years he gets to stay in nature and share his wines with his friends.

Come downtown to 123 S. Green St. to enjoy the wines produced from the Tehachapi soil.
