Tehachapi City Council recognizes AAUW Tehachapi Mountain Branch for its 40th anniversary. (Lauren Hollen, Netti Farrar, Joan Pogon-Cord, Mayor Michael Davies, Phyllis Belcher and Jane Custer).

Tehachapi Mountain Branch of American Association of University Women was chartered in March 1984 as the 93rd branch in California. This milestone 40th anniversary will be celebrated with a special program at the March 20 general meeting, which will be held at 4 p.m. in Friendship Hall of Tehachapi Community Church, 100 E. Green St.

Anyone who has ever belonged to the Tehachapi Mountain Branch, or is interested in joining, is invited to attend. Come early to enjoy some birthday cake, coffee and tea.

The keynote speaker will be Marti Sprinkle who will recall early days of AAUW in Tehachapi. In 1980, she and Evelyn Seaman began convincing women to join AAUW through the Bakersfield Branch. After three years there were about 50 women in Tehachapi who belonged to that branch. That was enough to become AAUW Tehachapi Mountain Branch.

Past presidents of Tehachapi Mountain Branch will be recognized and may share memories. Those unable to attend may send messages to be read at the meeting by program Vice President Cindy Marble. Send email messages to [email protected].

March is also Women's History Month and Andy Hicks will enact the life of a woman from history. AAUW Tehachapi has a long history of portraying historical women to students in Tehachapi classrooms. This is the first year that is not being done.

AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. Membership is open to both men and women with a 2-year or higher degree. See http://www.tehachapimountain-ca.aauw.net/ for more information.
