Meet Your New Neighbors

March 2, 2024

Elizabeth Mahurin moved to Tehachapi from California City at the end of December 2023. For the last nine years she had been living in California City while working as a substitute teacher, among numerous other jobs there. She retired on Dec. 22. Elizabeth had heard that Tehachapi was safe, beautiful and a nice place to live so she decided to check it out for herself. Accompanying Elizabeth to her new home is her service dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named Patches and two cats – Fernando, a 22-year-old Maine Coon, and Max, a Blue Point Russian.

Born in Venice, California, Elizabeth was raised in Canoga Park in the San Fernando Valley. She has two brothers, one lives in what she calls "Old Texas" and the other in Oxnard with their mother. She said her dad came from Texas. At 18 she traveled to Utah for college but returned to complete her education at Cal State Northridge and UCLA. She spent many of her years as a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District and then as a substitute teacher in Oxnard before moving to California City. During her nine years in California City she had the opportunity to work in the Muroc School District that includes Edwards Air Force Base, North Edwards and Boron, as well as in Mojave and California City.

Elizabeth loves camping and hiking and is looking forward to getting back on the trails when the weather turns warmer. She knows spring is just around the corner and she has much to look forward to in the spring in Tehachapi.

Welcome to Tehachapi, Elizabeth. It sounds like you have found the ideal place for your retirement.
