He attended junior college at Antelope Valley College, before transferring to Fresno State. He graduated from Fresno State in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in Sociology and was studying for his master's degree when illness forced him to come home.

After regaining his health, he moved to the Antelope Valley and went to work at the LA County abortion clinic as a counselor for a couple of years before going to work at the L.A. County Abuse Shelter as a counselor and finally rising to the rank of Manager of the shelter.

He was preceded in death by both his mom and dad. He is survived by his sister, JoAnn (Gary) Childress of Tehachapi, his brother Johnny of Lancaster, two nephews Gary Childress Jr. of Tehachapi and Jeff (Kim) Childress of Santa Maria and a great niece Ivana (Fred) Estrada of Irvine and great nephew Christopher of Phoenix, Arizona.
