Tehachapi Strings, Junior Orchestras to perform, Jan. 19

January 20, 2024

Sharon Kennedy Battistessa.

Johnnie Battistessa, Principal Cellist of the Tehachapi Symphony and Tehachapi Strings Orchestra, practices her music for the Jan. 19 Strings Orchestra concert.

The Tehachapi Strings Orchestra, under the direction of Gayel Pitchford, will perform its winter concert on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. at Tehachapi Valley United Methodist Church on Schout Road (across the street from Country Oaks Baptist Church) in Tehachapi.

Strings Orchestra will perform "Helter-Skelter" by Robert D. McCashin, "Hoe Down" from Rodeo by Aaron Copland, and "Rio de Fuego" by Frank J. Halferty. Junior Orchestra will perform "March Royal" by Elliot Del Borgo, "Rondo-Valse" by Muzio Clementi and "Fiddler's Fancy" by Richard Meyer. Following the orchestra pieces, seven musicians will perform in recital: Cellists Kelsey Wenner and Samuel Torres, Violinists Aaron Wenner, Steve Chambreau, Emma Giles, Jill Hall and Lila Amos.

The Strings Orchestra is the Tehachapi Symphony's intermediate to advanced level teaching orchestra. Many of its graduates have gone on to play in the Symphony and a number of them have received music scholarships for college. The Junior Orchestra is a beginning-level orchestra, composed of musicians from age 9 to 70+ years of age. Strings Orchestra and Junior Orchestra are the "farm clubs" for the Tehachapi Symphony.

This is a great opportunity to bring the whole family and expose the children to the wonders of playing a musical instrument. This performance is presented free to the public. There will be a reception following so audience members can meet and mingle with the players.
